Commercial Description:
Our winter strong ale has a gorgeous mahogany hue, a hint of hazelnuts, and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee. No spices, just a perfect blend of five specialty malts. Cellarable for 2 years.

Bottle: Dark brown pour consisting of a wispy tan head. Candied sugar, dark roasted english malt and some earthiness in the aroma. Sweet, dark malt-bomb with some chocolate and spiced fruit accents. Medium bodied. Good stuff.

bottle. A good ale from Avery (one of my favorite breweries)... a little disappointed in this one... I don’t know what I was expecting really but was very surprised at what I tasted.... a ton of plums. They could call this plum ale because the plum aroma and taste took over this beer - but it was good, just very different. Other aromas and flavors of malts shined through. It was a bit weak on the palate and in the finish. Would not buy again, but glad I had one.

It’s refreshing to find a ’winter wamer’ that isn’t burdened by obligatory spices. The right combination of different malts. Well made strong ale that doesn’t remind the taste buds that it’s 8%. Well done.

I love it when the holidays roll in and we get to buy this beer! A deep amber color and a darker lacy head. It has a very nutty, alcohol flavor that makes you want to move on to the next bottle. Happy Holidays.

Deep red/brown pour. Very tasty, enjoyable rich maltyness balance well with some hops. Want to try cellaring this and see how it tastes in a couple of years.

12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Deep reddish with lasting flat head and lace. Malty, earthy, winey, sugary aroma. Fruity sugary winey flavor with mild bitterness. Medium-full body and medium carb. Somewhat like a mild english barleywine. Pretty good.

’06 Version courtesy of jimbowood. Flavor of toffee and caramel. Warming alcohol aftertaste. Wish there was more punch to this one.

When cold the thick caramel sweetness is in discord with the bitter hop but as it warms it starts to make more sense...but not a whole lot.
