Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Bottled. A cloudy medium amber beer with a small, and fast disappearing white head. The aroma is sweet and vinous with notes of vanilla, dried fruits, oak, sugar and alcohol. Powerful nose. The flavour has an enormous sweetness and a oaky charachter. Perhaps too much sticky and syrupy. Full body, soft carbonation, long sweet finish with at least some bitterness to make it more drinkable. The alcohol is very present. Not overall sticky, which is a good thing. 14,5% ABV.

Tasting at Brewtopia. This beer is underrated here in my opinion. This was delicious. Cloudy orange pour. Aromas are full of wood, stone fruits, caramel, toffee and vanilla. The flavor is just amazing. Rich and smooth with sweet flavors of vanilla, oak, toffee, candy sugar...damn I went back and had 4ths and 5ths of this at the festival.

I am not sure I have ever had anything quite like this before, Drinks more like hard liquor than beer. Very dark orange color with a small tan head. Very pungent nose of ripe fruit and oak. Smooth mouthfeel and the alcohol is well hidden for something the powerful. Flavor of caramel malts, citrus hops, and ripe fruit. Probably not for everyone but I enjoyed it.

A deep orange barleywine with next to no head. Aorma is vineous with loads of caramel, alcohol and some slight vanlia-like aromas. The flavour is mellow and sweet with loads of caramel and malt. The oak is barely noticable apart from the vanila. The body is surprisingly light for a beer this size. I really couldn’t see why this beer had to be pumped this hard. It hasn’t made it more complex, extreme or anything - just high alcohol...

12 oz bottle: Bottled in May 2006: Batch 2. Via trade with lb4lb. Thanks! Aroma is pungent, extremely floral, dark fruit like plum dominate. Deep dark rich aroma, caramel, light hop poking through, butter malt, and an awesome all around scent. Appearance is an extremely cloudy amber looks almost like very cloudy apple cider with a medium sized head that diminishes into a soapy film. Taste is oak, vanilla, big on caramel malt, some citrus poking though, and almost a whiskey like taste to it. Overall, this stuff from 2006 is aged to perfection, IMHO. A really good Barley Wine that you should sit down for at least two years to get the full enjoyment. Cheers!
