Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Bottle. Pours a light red/brown with a thin beige head. The aroma makes me think about opening a very old wooden cask of brandy. The taste is pretty much oak, vanilla, some really sweet fruit flavored candies and of course a strong alcohol presence. Really not as hot as I had expected, also pretty unusual. Not anywhere near a typical BW.

Pours light orange/amber with a small head. Aroma is vanilla, oak and alcohol. Flavor is sweet, but not overly so. The sweetness is well banalced by a woody slighly smoky flavor. Alcohol is well hidden in the taste, but felt as it goes down your throught. This is my favorite of the Demons series.

Bottle. Hazy orange/amber color, almost no head. Lovely vonous aroma with lots of oak, figs, raisins, grapes, wood and malt. Oak flavor, vinous, woody, figs and raisins, sweetish, alcohol is very well hidden. HUge body. A great barley wine...

2005 vintage -- A muddy brown appearance, probably due to yeast sediment, with a light ivory head. Aroma is great, malty sweetness, with some nice peat accents. Taste is amazing, sweet dark fruits, heavy malting with a nice oak-aged ending in which again the dark fruits show prominence. Ending is sweet and smooth, very enjoyable. If you’ve got a 2005 bottle still sitting around, DRINK IT NOW!. =)

Bottle, 14.5%. Fat vanilla aroma, cigarbox all the way up to fat coconut. Cloudy red copper colour. Very small white head. Distinct coconut flavour, very sweet, malty and sugary. Alcohol nose burn. Very thick mouthfeel, syrupy.

Pours rich red-orange color with sugary hues immediately wafting from the glass. The body looks innocent but one whiff lets you know danger lurks inside. Even the smells try to act coy: baby-food sweet simplicity, heavily sweetened desserts. Alcohol. The malt comes out instantly in the mouth, adding some maturity to the beer. Although it burns going down the throat, the initial malt complexity is enough to compel another sip--but slowly. I’m also not picking up the oak and am searching for more complexity but there is something sweet and friendly about this barley wine.
