Commercial Description:
Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.

Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate. This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark ruby-red/amber with a thin mocha-colored head. Aroma is extremely strong with hints of caramel, honey, butterscotch, and molasses -- almost overpoweringly sweet. Taste is full and oddly bitter yet sweet with an initial flavor of caramel and honey giving way to a boozy bite, followed by a longer finish reminiscent of a very woody or peaty scotch. Interesting elements to this brew, but they don’t quite come together as well as they could.

A beguilingly sweet and nutty aroma and frothy head with caramel and hazelnut undertones makes this a striking brew, to say the least. The actual flavor shows a remarkable range between malt, coffee, chocolate, caramel, and the smoky peat of scotch with a stable, sweet finish. Would ideally be served as a beer with dessert, it would be nicely paired with poached fruit and ice cream.

Cloudy amber with creamy tan head / Nose of caramel and golden raisins / Full, sticky, winey body with creamy malts and long finish / Flavors of caramel, oak, apple, raisins, grapes, banana, and spice, with long, sweet caramel finish / Despite high alcohol, absolutely balanced. Another far out brew from Avery.

2005 - Bottle, thanks Irishboy. Toffee apple aroma, really can smell the oak and malt too. ZERO head, Red amber colour - Wine flavour with a huge sugar-brandy finish. Really don’t know what to make of this just yet - 5 mins later....... yes, I like it, interesting, sweet but not overly sticky. Really surprised it is 14.9%

$8.99 from PP Bottle shop. Sheesh! April 2007, Batch 3. Dark amber color. Small to no head, but a nice small bubble ring forms around the edge of the glass. Strong oaky, buttery, melanoidin malt plus a bit achohol in the nose. I think I’ve been confusing buttery and oaky aromas in my previous reviews. The oak is nicely strong. Flavor is sweet, but very hot. The achohol is decently hidden in the nose, but very present on the taste reducing drinkability. I agree with other, that this needs to be mixed down with some other beer. Much better as it warms up, it seems like the alchohol burn hotness fades some.

Full body, sugar, sugar & more sugar. While and interesting attempt at it’s style, it is like no other I’ve tasted. It’s very port-wine reminiscent, with, guess what, sugar. While not entirely unpleasant, mixing it 1/2/ & 1/2 with a highly hopped IPA enhances the experience to the sinful brew I believe it was meant to be.

courtesy of fiulijn - pours a hazy reddish-amber colour with a little pale beige foam; robust aroma of port-wine, dried fruits and vanilla, wood and caramel come also to mind; totally excessive sweetness, sticky and syrupy, full-bodied; some bitterness tries painfully to shine but fails due to the huge sweetness; long sugary finish with notes of vanilla and oranges and a solid burning alcohol kick - very similar to a young Samichlaus; I wonder how it could look like after 10 years of ageing
