Commercial Description:
Sui Generis, which is #2 in our new Barrel-Aged Series, will debut at the Avery Tap Room on Wednesday, September 23rd from 3-8 PM. Due to extremely limited quantities of this brew (<150 cases will be produced), 12oz. single bottles will be sold only at the Avery Tap Room, between 3 PM and 8 PM on September 23rd. Sui Generis is a complex ale, aged and artfully blended from several types of oak barrels, and displays a delightful lactic sourness complimented by hints of brett, oak, and acetic. Intricate yet bold, deeply complex yet surprisingly refreshing, Sui Generis was crafted in the tradition of perennial Tap Room favorites De Vogelbekdieren and Voltron.
A blend of ales from 39% Cabernet Sauvignon barrels, 35% Chardonnay barrels, 13% Port barrels and 13% Bourbon barrels.

Bottle. Pours hazy brown with a large, frothy off-white head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is average malt (bread, cookie, straw), average hop (flowers, grass), heavy yeast (horse blanket, barnyard) with notes of bubble gum, grape, raisin, and plenty of Bretty character. Full bodied, creamy texture, lively carbonation, and a metallic finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

Thanks a ton to the one who shared this from the STL group. Pours amber with an off-white head. The aroma is funky and sour with sour grapes, sweet / tart, sharp berries and light oak. Medium crisp boy with a sharp clean finish. The taste start with a sharpness, brown toasted malt, graininess, slight nuttiness, some funk and spice. The finish is phenolic and dry wine traits. Very nice beer.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a huge, off-white head and a hazy golden brown body. Aroma of raspberry, fresh fruit, pineapple, cherry, wood and a dry, spicy red wine. Taste is sour with wine, cherry, lacto/pedio. Light bubbles. Nice.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Notes of white pepper, tangy pineapple, wet yarn, horse blanket, and boozy fermenting berries. Mouthfeel is tangy yet tannic. Like this beer.

12 ounce bottle, bottled Sept. 18 2009. A big thanks to Jeremy for this, and thanks to Eric for bringing it. Pours a opaque red-brown color with a medium white head. The aroma is strong; sweet funky brett and barrel, light vinous wine notes. A tart and funky flavor; brett, sweet french oak, light fizzy vinous flavors, sour and very much like a white wine or even champagne. Perhaps a bit of bourbon lingers on the end the palate suggesting sweeter flavors that ultimately lose out to barnyard funk and vinous sour flavors. No alcohol present at all really and very easygoing, not over the top in any aspect.

Well, I;ve waited tis long to try this and man am I far from dissapointed. Aroma is wonderfully funky, starting with leathery brett with berry skins and must. There is a wonderful orvalish quality to the aroma that begs for repeated inhalations. I really can’t get enough of the aroma of this beer. Pours a barelt hazy orangish red with medium off white head. Medium lacing. As it warms, aromas of tart cherry funk come to the forefront. Nice elements of barrel and brett dominate. The flavor continues the exploration of depth with notes of dry tannic cherry skin, concord grape, balanced woody barrel notes, and a drying brett funk. Mild metallic blood like notes weave themselves into the flavor without being distraccting.. Carbonation is mild and pleasant. The finish is drying and tannic, but not overly so. Faint hints of fruit skins persist into the finish. Truly a remarkable beverage and job well done by avery. I just wish this had the distribution of brabant.

bottle. mildly opaque burgundy colored body with a small white head. nose of pedio and lacto with a rich wooden black cherry fruit note (a little candied) and a mild to medium sweet balsamic note. texture is silky, carbonation is soft and presents the acidity well. bright and effervescent on the approach, it turns from the black cherry fruit notes to dried apricot and peach fuzz in the finish. medium to heavy acidity, soft finish but dissipates quickly. one of the better recent beers from avery but I have little faith this will survive in the bottle past 3-4 months.
