mmather (113), Colorado, USA May 2, 2008 From the original batch aged for 3 years. Not much has changed here, still an incredibly sweet, alcoholically hot beer that I still love anyway. Stylistically and objectively beer-wise, it is an over alcoholic train wreck even 4 years later. However, I still like the malty sweetness and even though the incredible alcohol content is very evident, for me it doesn’t kill the beer. Perm (151), Tryon, North Carolina, USA Apr 28, 2008 Notes from 2006 release.
This beer is worth having once, just so you can brag that you’ve had it. It’s hard to fork out that much moolah for a single 12 oz. bottle, though, when the Thomas Hardy’s is sitting right across the way.
This beer isn’t named and labeled with a nod towards Satan for nothing -- it is sinister and evil enough for the best of us, with the necessary amount of enticing temptation to make us waver.
This brew is definitely for sipping and respecting -- otherwise it’s liable to knock you right onto the floor.
As can be expected from something with that many different brewing sugars (turbinado, raisin, dates, molasses, honey, and dark Belgian candi), there is a pervading sweetness that certainly isn’t for everyone. I’m intrigued to cellear this one for the recommended 10 years and see how it matures/mellows. If I can convince myself to get past the sticker shock again. brewblackhole (1366), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Apr 25, 2008 There should be a warning label on this brew that the little prissy pinkie extenders need not bother to even deal with this. This is one meaty brew, big full dark raisin, dates and alcohol aroma, monsterously sweet like sipping a port of Mogan David Wine. Ultimately complex, no flaws. johndavidj99 (123), Township, Maine, USA Apr 24, 2008 Yuck. This was an unfortunate drain pour for me. I aged it 6 months too! It is that typical high alcohol content smell/taste that has a bad sweetness. It is similar to D’extra and Samels. Not up my alley. elcaballo (101), Beverly Hills, California, USA Apr 23, 2008 Batch 5- Umm wow thats strong stuff. Actually i really enjoyed the boozy finish to this, but wow...the rest of this is just too much. Too many flavors going on, too stickingly sweet, I just could not get the taste off me. An interesting beer but could not even finish the glass. buckyp (32), Rio Rancho, New Mexico, USA Apr 19, 2008 Batch 3. 12 oz. poured into tumbler with dark brown cloudy body with medium, tan head. Head dissipated quickly. Aroma was a preamble to the sweetness. Malty, caramel, and anise most noted. Turbinado and Belgian sugars dominated palate. Smoother than expected given ABV but Batch 2 is in bottle for 3 years now. Enjoyable for special occasions. I’ve ordered more through local distributer but not sure what batch I’ll get. Will update rating if any differences noted. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA Apr 18, 2008 Batch 1 - I sware to god, the turbinado sugar makes all the difference in this beer. This is really nicely done. Not extremely complex, and really on the larger side for the style, almost like you would think of an amped up Quad. Cookie dough, fruit cake, molasses and other various spices, really test the limits of balance, with this much alcohol in a beer. It almost tranisitions into an apertif, this is like a lighter version of cognac Swalden28 (1439), McKinney, Texas, USA Apr 18, 2008 Bottle. Batch 5, 2007. WOW....poured a clear copper with an excellent beige head with nice retention. Aroma hits you with strong malt, molasses and alcohol spice. Flavor was of sweet malt, hop flavors, and alcohole spice....Very full bodied beer on the palate, heavy.....low-medium carbonation......VERY tough beer....very good beer.....very nice looking beer...
