muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA Dec 31, 2006 12 big American ounces (batch 4?) bottle shared with some Quebecois and Ontrarians at the Montreal YeHa 2006 tasting, from a McAuslan glass. Dark mahogany, translucent with a small lasting head....strongly alcoholic, maple-sugary sweet, thick nose, lightly woody and drier as it warms, faint herbal notes....on the tongue, extremely sweet, syrupy, thick with maple sugar and molasses, utterly unbalanced and crude....higher carbonation might help, but it’s soft and cloying.....like drinking toothpaste made with sugar, this is. I hope the earlier batches I have sitting around aren’t this hard to drink.... shp555 (1678), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Dec 26, 2006 Pours a orange amber color with a white head. Aroma is of sweet malts, molasses, and alcohol. Flavor is sweet malts, dried fruit and loads of alcohol. Could not finish a whole 12 oz bottle way too much alcohol. nhorween (639), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 22, 2006 Bottle, 2005. Heavy brown color with a yellowish-beige head, nice cascade of bubbles after the pour. Hugely alcoholic aroma - caramel malts, toast, almonds, oak. vanilla... only the strongest aromas make it through that screen of alcohol. Flavor isn’t terrible, but way, way to sweet. The alcohol is hidden well in the flavor, but not in the way it makes my mouth and throat feel. Raisins, caramel, toffee, and vanilla dominate the flavor and coat the inside of the mouth. Very tame bitter finish laced with the burning from the alcohol. Syrupy thick in the mouth. There are some interesting flavors in this beer, but it’s totally unbalanced. Too sweet and too outwardly alcoholic. It’s worth a try, but Avery has much, much better things to offer. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Dec 22, 2006 Updated: Jun 20, 2008Almost clear dark copper body, very small off-white head. Grossly over-alcoholised beer with nowhere for the alcohol to hide. Toothpaste aroma, burning alcohol sensation the likes of which I expect from a whiskey, very sweet, very aggressive. I tried to focus and find some flavours but I just couldn’t (may have something to do with the state I was in though). It’s a beast indeed, primitive, unsophisticated, violent, aggressive and the same will be said about you if you drink 6 of those. LooseCannon (914), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Dec 18, 2006 12 oz bottle, 2006 bottled. Cloud dark copper color with brown head. Sweat aroma of malt, brown suger and molasses. Taste of the smae as the aroma with warming alcohol taste WOW!!! ehhdayton (1113), USA Dec 14, 2006 Pours a reddish amber with small head. The aroma is full with toffee, hops, spices, fruit, molasses, and raisins. the flavor is equally complex with molasses, raisins, dark fruit, maltiniess, and hops. The overall there is a syrupy, like a liquer, mouthfeel. Marsiblursi (1631), Göteborg, Sweden Dec 13, 2006 (Bottle, thanks Jugge) Pours amber/red. Sweet malty aroma with some toffee. Plums and raisins with heavy (exotic) fruits. Peppery alcohol. Small hints of mazipan, spices and honey. Very sweet flavour with Sugar/molasses and some alcohol. Medium bitter mouthfeel. Not to complex, but really good. jason (1620), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 11, 2006 2006 bottle. Whew what a strong beer. This took forever for it to warm up for me, but when it did it was great. Very dark ruby color with a head that stays. Flavor is a little too sweet but good. Can taste the high ABV. Lots of candy used. Good brew but not worth the $.
