Sweet sticky maltiness with sweet hop bite. I just cannot believe this is 15.7% Creamy vanilla and smoke are the flaovors I get most here. This is awesome. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 15, 2006 Batch #3, review #400 for me, so I decided to go with what Avery Grand Cru, after it all it should be their best, right? Pours a ruby red amber with a smaller off white lacing head that stuck around nicely. Aroma is a bit vinegar like at first....and I hate vinegar. After the initial vinegar aroma I start to pick up some more of the sweet malts I was getting in the flavor. Could also pick up some of the caramel But then the flavor is very sweet. Caramel and sugar along with some fruits and a bit of the alcohol in the tail. Not sure I pick up the Belgian Strong Ale characteristics. Reminds me more of some of the high octane DFH brews. hotstuff (3180), Indiana, USA

A favorite beer style of mine along with a high ABV to boot! Oh my God! Wow! Bottled in 2004. 22oz bottle. Poured a small sized tan head with fine-small sized bubbles that mostly dissipated. The body was carbonated, transparent and a ruby hue. Beautiful! The aroma was just as beautiful...malty, caramel, sweet, spicy notes, raisins, and alcohol. The flavor was extremely to my liking since I so much enjoy high ABV beers. It was sweet tasting, alcohol, and cherries. The mouthfeel was tingly and it had an alcohol burn in the back of the throat. The lacing was sparse. Definitely a sipping beer. Hoping to get another bottle of this to age. This is definitely a kick-ass beer!! Party on!! TheBeerGod (3171), Newport News, Virginia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 8, 2004 Thanks to ecrvich for sending this my way! Clouded reddish brown. The nose is huge on this one. Sweetened malt and alcohol along with spices and fruits. A full bouquet of things to come! There's some sugary sweeteness, spices, bold alcohol notes, some rum-soaked fruit, light hops and caramel making up the flavor of this Beast (pun intended!). The alcohol kick is very noticeable, but I like big beers like this and it doesn't detract from enjoyment. Damn good beer! PorterPounder (3148), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Oct 28, 2004 I’m the Beast. So that’s what you call me. That, or Beaster, His Beastness. Or El Beasterino, if, you know, you’re not into the whole brevity thing. (with apologies to the Cohen Bothers and the Dude) Aroma of fresh fruit, alcohol (brandy specifically), dark copper appearance with a thin off-white head with a tad bit of lacing, Alcohol is hidden extremely well considering it is 18.1% - for that I am giving it a 5 for palate. (I have yet to stand up though). Flavor of rum-soaked raisins, baked brown bread, and alcohol. Would make a good winter sipper/warmer - don’t know why they put this in a bomber though! Expect a helluva hangover tomorrow! GeneralGao (3071), Iowa City, Iowa, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 30, 2006 12 oz bottle. 2005 vintage. Let me start out by saying...Holy Crap. Poured a lovely reddish-orange sunset color. Smells distinctly of alcohol with hints of soy sauce, barbeque sauce, grape candy, and molasses. Flavor is similar. The soy flavor lingers after each sip. I may try dipping pot stickers in it. Unlike soy, however, this stuff is powerfully sweet, like a big cloud of cotton candy in each bottle. Full bodied, slick, and oily. You feel the warmth of the alcohol coating your esophagus and stomach. Quite a wild ride, this one. Gets some points for being unique, but it’s a bit much. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 28, 2007 2005 (Batch 3) fridged since purchase at my folks house in Washington DC. Pours thick reddish brown with a thin tan head. The nose was markedly large when i poured it and when I get close for a sniff, it smells like a sweet barley wine with something extra. The taste is sweet and full bodied with a deep alcoholic tickle. Its thick and syrupy but holds carbonation. Overall its a pretty interesting mix of beer types and its not half bad either.
