gws57 (990), Saint Charles, Illinois, USA Mar 12, 2007 Found this one (22 oz bottle, 2006) in St. Charles, Illinois. Opaque, dark brown pour with a thick, light brown head. Sweet, carmelly goodness in the nose. Very pronounced, shockingly alcoholic, with bitter coffee, almonds, bitter chocolate and cherries. Finished clean but strong. It was good but I couldn’t finish more than one of these.
kappldav123 (997), Markkleeberg, Germany Sep 6, 2008 The bottle looks good, but I don’t like those pictures on it. The beer in the glass is deep black. Starts malty and dry. Finish almost sweet. Notes of liquorice. Not as scratchy as other Imperial Stouts. Good one!
Thanks to Kaggie97 for the bottle! Blom (651), Odense, Denmark Sep 6, 2008 2005 Batch. Black with a good thick greyish head. Powerful aroma of coffee, roasted malts, black chocolate and alcohol. A full bodied bastard this is - supplying loads of roastiness, chocolate, bitter hops , alcohol and coffee. oberabcbbsok (682), Hoboken, Belgium Aug 29, 2008 Batch 2006 on draft. A very nice and good tasting stout. Full bodied and very strong. Really nice beer JCB (1014), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 27, 2008 2006 batch from The Good Beer Store, Chapel Hill (RIP). Black like the darkest winter night, a sludgy motor oil pour. Just like I like it, almost like espresso as an alcohol delivery system. Still quite hoppy like the rest of Avery’s big beers (Cascade, maybe?). But it works to complement the overall deeply roasty quality of this brew. It’s a bit sticky in the middle, but that’s almost unavoidable with this kind of style I suppose. Hints of anise complement the coffee and chocolate malt flavors too. Rich and delicious. joeymacaroni (116), West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 24, 2008 sampled @ State Line. pours dark black/ brown with a thin tan head. aroma is dark caramel, liquorice, and light dark fruits. taste is heavy anise/liquorice, chocolate, caramel and brown sugar. nice and thick, creamy with slight oiliness. finish is an anise note that lingers nicely for a while.
