Commercial Description:
Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex with age.

Dark pour with a dark tan head. Aroma of strong roasted malt, more strong chocolate, and dark fruit. Hops are strong in the flavor which blend well with toffee, molasses, and a light burnt trait. Again, very good brew. Definitely worth another purchase.

2006 batch from The Good Beer Store, Chapel Hill (RIP). Black like the darkest winter night, a sludgy motor oil pour. Just like I like it, almost like espresso as an alcohol delivery system. Still quite hoppy like the rest of Avery’s big beers (Cascade, maybe?). But it works to complement the overall deeply roasty quality of this brew. It’s a bit sticky in the middle, but that’s almost unavoidable with this kind of style I suppose. Hints of anise complement the coffee and chocolate malt flavors too. Rich and delicious.

sampled @ State Line. pours dark black/ brown with a thin tan head. aroma is dark caramel, liquorice, and light dark fruits. taste is heavy anise/liquorice, chocolate, caramel and brown sugar. nice and thick, creamy with slight oiliness. finish is an anise note that lingers nicely for a while.

22oz bomber of the 2006 batch. Pours a deep black with a nice creamy brown head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, oak, molasses, brown sugar, dark fruits. Flavor is creamy bitter chocolate, burnt coffee, dark fruits, caramel, slightly boozy. Decent mouthfeel, (I hate thin impy stouts) I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

22oz bomber from the 2005 vintage tasted at my first imperial stout tasting. Pours a flat, watery black with very low carbonation and a thin white head. Aroma of vanilla, oak and brown sugar. Flavors are the same with some nuttiness, a touch of coffee, some toast and a bit of dark chocolate. Creamy on the tongue with a lot of heat from the alcohol dominating the palate. Looks like its aging alright.
