carruthm (1112), Seattle, Washington, USA Feb 28, 2009 slightly cloudy orange with thin dense head. nice caramel brown sugar aroma. somewhat plain taste though. randolphjj (89), Raymore, Missouri, USA Feb 21, 2009 It’s a gorgeous beer. caramel color and a lacy white head. Loving the candy sugar in this - it gives it a sweet, creamy taste and with the traditional fruit spice you’ll find in a quad. It’s 10% of tasty goodness, but can get a bit syrupy as you let it warm. kopher (295), New York, USA Feb 18, 2009 cloudy orange, topped with minimal froth
aroma is mostly old pears and yeast, floral hops
flavor is also apple and pear, a bit odd for a belgian, but with some of that underlying raisinyness and whatnot. also strong alcohol
a bit thin, lingering finish but somewhat watery BeerBaron617 (306), Novi, Michigan, USA Feb 9, 2009 I had this in the bottle at Ashley’s in Ann Arbor MI. I basically chose this on a whim, since everything I’ve had from avery recently has been amazing. This poured a very pretty dark amber with a delicate white head. This wasn’t a "wow" beer, but it was definitely a strong effort from a great brewery. It had some sweetness and a hint of raisins on the finish. A great beer with a great story behind it. Cheers! BrotherGrendel (551), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Feb 9, 2009 a- pours a clear, dark amber hue with one finger of very creamy white head that is mostly diminishing, fair lacing, and tiny particulates
s- nose is of sweet, sugary malts as well as a variety of fruit tones (dark fruits and apples), nice Belgian aroma with light alcohol presence
t- Taste is well-balanced with caramel malts and sweet sugar, long full aftertaste is mostly bitter hops and a decent kick of alcohol
m- Full-bodied with adequate carbonation and rich mouthfeel
d- this is a nice, big quadrupel from Avery, very solid in all categories but not quite reaching the upper tier
jkwalking05 (1483), Arlington, Texas, USA Jan 31, 2009 Dark amber in color with a good sized off-white head. Aroma is of yeast, spices, caramel, and raisin. Taste is of molasses, rasins, cherries, and sweet malt. KnN (714), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Jan 26, 2009 Poured a nice red/amber color with a thin off white head. Aroma immediately reminded me of an algae covered pond, kind of earthy, green, and a little bit putrid. I could smell some malt, but it was masked a bit by the green smells. Flavor wasn’t quite so heavy on the algae, but there was something a touch metallic and off. There was a bit of an alcohol burn, but it was mostly masked by the flavor. Not sure if I got a bad bottle of this or what. May have to revisit.
