nqualls (1429), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Aug 16, 2008 22 oz bomber from Frugal MacDoogal’s in Nashville. This beer was totally unimpressive. The beer poured a hazy amber color with very little head. Aroma was malty, with some earthy foul smelling notes. Flavor was very plain. Mouthfeel was creamy, but with absolutely no carbonation. I wouldn’t call this a drain pour, but I was very unimpressed. OSLO (825), Perth, Australia Aug 16, 2008 [Bottle] Pours dark amber with a decent cream head. Aroma is fairly sweet, but there is actually a pretty solid maltiness in there as well. Taste is (big surprise) very sweet and boozy. There is a decent amount of yeast and a hint of fruitiness, but otherwise the sugary sweetness and alcohol dominate. Quite thick with a decent finish. I wouldn’t have tried this if it had not been at a tasting, and I am overall quite unimpressed with it. Slipstream (734), USA Aug 14, 2008 Updated: Aug 15, 2008Avery is getting to be one of my favorite breweries, so for a while I’ve been wanting to try some of their high end, bomber-only releases. This quadrupel, with its label drawing of a grim-faced monk standing before a colorful window, seemed like a good place to start. Bright, rust-colored pour. The aroma is potent and penetrates the sinuses - floral hops, peachy esters, grapes, and enough alcohol to make my eyes water. I sampled it from different glasses too, and I would not recommend a goblet with a narrow top, since that concentrates the smell too much. The flavor is robust, and seems as comparable to a liqueur or a whiskey drink as to a beer. This brew sends waves of different sensations along the palate. It starts out with sweet malt, Belgian yeast, and dried fruit; then shifts to hops, and finishes with a whiskey-infused warmth and numbness. There is a great blasphemous quote on the label: "Created by God, brewed by Satan, loved by all." Well, maybe not all. How about respected rather than loved? This is a good abbey ale, but a little too much like a bourbon cocktail for true love. redgold07 (308), Irving, Texas, USA Aug 6, 2008 Pours a dark orange/molasses color with a decent sized tan head. Aroma is slightly hoppy, with alcohol, fruit, and sugar. Flavor is slightly sweet of hops, dark fruit, bread, and a nice hop presence and slight flavor of alcohol.
1 pt. 6 oz. bottle. bierkoning (5989), La Tropica, Netherlands Aug 4, 2008 Bottle. orange color. Raisin and some grassy hops in the vinous aroma. Malty sweet, honeyish raisinny vinous flavor. Hardly a sign of alcohol. Deceivingly soft beer. 12many (231), Ohio, USA Aug 3, 2008 Bottle. Clear copper with a decent head and lacing. Spicy aroma with some alcohol that comes through. Flavor is very sweet with some alcohol but is smooth with good carbonation. Compared to trappist quads this is nothing. mcbackus (725), Merritt Island, Florida, USA Jul 28, 2008 bottle from 2005: pours a slight dirty caramel brown witha small off white head. aroma is kinsa week with hints of dark caramel, burnt sugars, and that is a bout it. the falvour is warm and sweet with light caramel adn sugars the finish is quick and a bit watered down. GJF (480), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA Jul 26, 2008 This is a really nice quadrupel. Pours a nice copper with a thin white head (dissolves pretty quickly though). Yeasty aroma and nice spicy flavor. It’s on the verge of being a really great beer, but the sweetness was just a touch cloying to me. But certainly a fine beer.
