Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

pours nice copper color with small white head. carmel, dark fruit, molasses, malt in the nose. flavor is very dry, alcohol warmth, yeasty. some sort of subtle spice in there that i don’t dig too much, but not bad overall.

22oz bottle, foolishly purchased. Pours a bright, clear ruby-orange color; light-tan head with glistening fine-bubbled lacing. Stale malts, chewy dried fruits, and boozy leather in the aroma; highly alcoholic for the amount of aroma. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: sticky candy sugar, cardboard, and chewy, ridiculously sticky maltiness; unbalanced and just remarkably sweet without much character or malty complexity. Very, very disappointing, though I should know better. Lengthy, sticky finish: cardboard, chewy malts, cereal, and basic sugar. Not very good at all.

22oz. bottle: This one pours a slightly ruby tinged amber color. There was a very small off white head that disappeared almost immediately. There is some alcohol to the nose. Also notes of spices, caramel, and some fruits. It is very flavorful. There are many. Caramel, a hint of spices, maybe cherries. Nice.

The Reverend was one of the first big beers that I have ever enjoyed. I first drank it about 5 or 6 years ago, when it still had the wax cap covering. I just drank it last night, which was my first time in a long time. It has a beautiful orange color and a nice, sweet malty aroma. What I like the best about the Reverend is that it is very strong and complex, yet it is so enjoyable to drink. There is no harshness at all. I taste dates in the malt, but not overbearing. The hop profile is low, as it should be. This is a sneaky beer, in that you don’t realize that you are drinking a 10% quadruple ale!

Pours a reddish amber with a nice fine head. There is aroma that hints of yeast and fruit. The taste is a mix of apple, spice, pepper, alcohol, and ginger.

22 oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazy reddish brown. A bit of an off-white head. Aroma is very strong: malty and fruity, with a hint of spice. Flavor is even stronger, starts with a significant apple notes, with some underlying molasses, and ends with a spicy flourish. Wow. A lot going on in this brew. Didn’t sit too well with me, but the flavor is interesting.
