Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Bottled. Cloudy red-orange colour with with medium-sized head. Big, fruity aroma, with higher alcohols and bit toasty from dark malts. Warming, oozy alcohol is sensed in throat. Super smooth mouthfeel and rounded. Bitterness is noted but is not that high. Only light on the belgo-yeasty with notes of ripe prune. Very close to a Barley Wine here.

Poured a nice cloudy amber color with very little head. Smelled very much of caramel. The taste was similar to the scent, but more pronounced, the caramel malt was there and I thought I tasted some sugar as well. Overall a good brew, very well balanced on the mouth without any unpleasant after-tastes. Certainly a beer to be had again. Serving type: on-tap

Golden color, nice head. Lacks the initial high carbonation of most belgian beer. Smells clean and fruity, but I don’t sense anything in particular. A bit of an alcohol bite, seems they wanted this. Might use a little aging(?).

Hazy amber, huge fluffy white head. Bit of brandy in the nose, sugared alcohol, yeast and fruity malt. Flavor is sweet and strong, candi sugar and alcohol. Excellent.

Tap at Barcade: Copper/amber pour with decent clarity and an off-white head. Sweet nutty aroma with mild dried fruit. There’s also that brown sugar and fig with some Belgian-y esters. The flavor starts nutty and toasted, with decent character. Then it becomes a homogeneous sweet mess of raisin and candied sugar. Not much depth. Although it started a bit tasty, the finish isn’t balancing.

On tap at the Oldsmar Tap House. Pours a deep amber color with a thin white head that provides lacing on the glass. Aroma is sweet, malty, nuts (sweet pecans?) with notes of fruit and a little spice. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of candy, caramel, syrup, and maybe a touch of molasses. Medium to full body with a sweet and malty, caramel finish.

Pours out a reddish color with thin fizzy white head. Aroma is of belgian sugar, belgian spice, yeast and ripe fruit. Taste is the same. More of a La Trappe quad then a Rochefort. This brew seemed a bit too sweet for my liking. A bit abrasive when compared to Rochefort 10. Not bad, but something I won’t be picking up again.
