RedSox2004 (353), Pacific Palisades, California, USA May 3, 2008 Poured reddish orange with a one-finger head, the result of a very careful pour. Intricate lacing all the way down the Chimay goblet. Sweetness, not overpowering, in the smell like candy and bananas, also some spices. High ABV not evident yet. Sweetness hits right away in the taste, and now the alcohol is felt, but in a warming, mellowing way. Right at the start, you know that you’ll enjoy this for a while. Flavors are more like berries and cherries than the bananas I expected from the aroma. Somewhat syrupy. Medium to full bodied, smooth, soft carbonation, very enjoyable but certainly not the beer to have when you’re having more than one. mclark83 (2), Manhattan, Kansas, USA does not count May 2, 2008 Pours a nice amber color. Poured very nice. Reminded me of a nice brandy color. Nice little white head that dissipates quickly. Has a very sweet taste. Has a nice aroma of orange and molasses. I let it warm up for a little bit at room temperature. Very sweet taste on the palate that had a noticeable alcohol in the aftertaste that lingered at bit. Although the alcohol went quickly it catches up with you. Altogether, very nice beer would suggest for others to at least try once. tkimbrought05 (37), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA May 1, 2008 Pours a red copper color with no carbonation, so of course, no head at all. Is extremely sweet on the palate with some alcohol in the aftertaste. Taste almost more like a wine than a beer. trevor211 (500), Seattle, Washington, USA Apr 29, 2008 Not my kind of beer, and not anywhere near the best of the Belgian quads. Pours a clear amber - like a good IIPA with a Belgian head. The beer is overbearing with a harsh alcohol burn, like a slightly weaker, overcarbonated version of Eggenberg’s Samischlaus. Aroma of oranges and caramel, with the flavor opening up a bit to an Irish whiskey, black licorice and spices. It’s lacking in any complexity, though. Contrary to Avery’s description, it doesn’t hide the alcohol in the least - it actually has a bit of the burn of a cheap spirit. Sticky sweet, and really not up my alley. dkingsella (85), Portland, Oregon, USA Apr 28, 2008 Pours a reddish amber color with a nice large off white head that recedes to a nice ring and film leaving a nice lacing. Aroma is earthy with dried fruits, bannana, and malts. Nice flavor with much of the same as the aroma add black licorice, brown sugar, mollasses, honey and spices. Sweet, but not too much so. Nice sticky mouthfeel. Flavor complexities change as it warms, so slow down and enjoy. Nice quad. greedycheater (80), Oklahoma, USA Apr 25, 2008 Dynamic aroma - switching between sweet and a crisp floral. Solid amber appearance with little carbonation and a quickly dissipating white head. Complex flavor that starts heavy on sweet malt and quietly moves to a combination of Ouzo (black licorice) and single malt whiskey. Full bodied, you will notice the 10% abv on the long, sticky finish of this brew. fredandboboflo (1395), East Setauket, New York, USA Apr 19, 2008 Bottle. Aroma of pretty rich, caramel malt with a Belgian twang, not overly complex. Flavor brings in a bunch of fruitiness, apricot, mango, raisin as it warms more. Again, not overly complex, but actually for me not as sweet as i expected. That said, the mouthfeel did start to wear on me toward the end of the glass, that’s where the syrupiness kicks in. Overall though, pretty solid. LilBeerDoctor (1480), East Setauket, New York, USA Apr 19, 2008 Bottle. Pours brown with a small light tan head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, not much fruit in the aroma. Flavor was of candy sugar, raisin, molasses, some spices. Sweet but not too sweet. Not a great quad, but a good beer nonetheless.
