Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Tap at Barcade: Copper/amber pour with decent clarity and an off-white head. Sweet nutty aroma with mild dried fruit. There’s also that brown sugar and fig with some Belgian-y esters. The flavor starts nutty and toasted, with decent character. Then it becomes a homogeneous sweet mess of raisin and candied sugar. Not much depth. Although it started a bit tasty, the finish isn’t balancing.

On tap at the Oldsmar Tap House. Pours a deep amber color with a thin white head that provides lacing on the glass. Aroma is sweet, malty, nuts (sweet pecans?) with notes of fruit and a little spice. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of candy, caramel, syrup, and maybe a touch of molasses. Medium to full body with a sweet and malty, caramel finish.

Pours out a reddish color with thin fizzy white head. Aroma is of belgian sugar, belgian spice, yeast and ripe fruit. Taste is the same. More of a La Trappe quad then a Rochefort. This brew seemed a bit too sweet for my liking. A bit abrasive when compared to Rochefort 10. Not bad, but something I won’t be picking up again.

Poured reddish orange with a one-finger head, the result of a very careful pour. Intricate lacing all the way down the Chimay goblet. Sweetness, not overpowering, in the smell like candy and bananas, also some spices. High ABV not evident yet. Sweetness hits right away in the taste, and now the alcohol is felt, but in a warming, mellowing way. Right at the start, you know that you’ll enjoy this for a while. Flavors are more like berries and cherries than the bananas I expected from the aroma. Somewhat syrupy. Medium to full bodied, smooth, soft carbonation, very enjoyable but certainly not the beer to have when you’re having more than one.

Pours a nice amber color. Poured very nice. Reminded me of a nice brandy color. Nice little white head that dissipates quickly. Has a very sweet taste. Has a nice aroma of orange and molasses. I let it warm up for a little bit at room temperature. Very sweet taste on the palate that had a noticeable alcohol in the aftertaste that lingered at bit. Although the alcohol went quickly it catches up with you. Altogether, very nice beer would suggest for others to at least try once.

Pours a red copper color with no carbonation, so of course, no head at all. Is extremely sweet on the palate with some alcohol in the aftertaste. Taste almost more like a wine than a beer.

Not my kind of beer, and not anywhere near the best of the Belgian quads. Pours a clear amber - like a good IIPA with a Belgian head. The beer is overbearing with a harsh alcohol burn, like a slightly weaker, overcarbonated version of Eggenberg’s Samischlaus. Aroma of oranges and caramel, with the flavor opening up a bit to an Irish whiskey, black licorice and spices. It’s lacking in any complexity, though. Contrary to Avery’s description, it doesn’t hide the alcohol in the least - it actually has a bit of the burn of a cheap spirit. Sticky sweet, and really not up my alley.

Pours a reddish amber color with a nice large off white head that recedes to a nice ring and film leaving a nice lacing. Aroma is earthy with dried fruits, bannana, and malts. Nice flavor with much of the same as the aroma add black licorice, brown sugar, mollasses, honey and spices. Sweet, but not too much so. Nice sticky mouthfeel. Flavor complexities change as it warms, so slow down and enjoy. Nice quad.
