Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Pours a light translucent amber. Very thin frothy amber head. The aroma is sweet, fruity, alcohol, a little Belgian must. The flavor is sweet, really hot alcohol, a little Belgian must, dry, not too hot. The palate is harsh and hot, not too nice of a finish.

Oh man...I felt just like a Catholic schoolboy after messing around with this Reverend! Man, there is a lot going on here for sure. Malty...carmel...fruit...maybe coffee? toffee? Good lord (get it?) I can’t keep up. The candy sugar is very apparent, and (sadly) so is that 10%. Too strong and complicated for me, just too much going on and none of it good. Avery’s other offerings are MUCH better.

(Two year old bottle) Pours a glowing reddish amber colour with a small off white head. The aroma is very sweet sugary and quite complex with some alcohol warmth. The malt brings caramel and toffee but also some notes of cookies and almonds. Floral hops in the background. Bit yeasty and very fruity with tones of cherries, pears, oranges, plums, kiwi and currant. Also some spiciness in the background of pepper, cinnamon and maybe some clove. Hints of marzipan. The flavour is medium fruity, medium spicy, medium to full malty and sugary and light yeasty. Lots of caramel, toffee, almonds and cherries but also some hints of cinnamon and white pepper. The mouthfeel is soft, round and sticky, but not too sticky. Medium sweet and light bitter with a light dryish ending. Aftertaste is peppery with a lingering sugary and caramelly sting. Near full bodied. This is a quite nice beer but not that try to the style and something is missing.

A darkish red/brown color, with a slight yellowy/tan head. The aromas of sweet molassas, malt and citrus come thru. The flavors of dark cherries, malt, and spice, with an extra kick of sweetness just when you thought it was over. The sweetness gets to be a bit much if you get to a second bottle. Maybe I should try it during the warmer months.

2003 vintage in the bomber bottle. Pours a mixture of purple, amber and red. Only a thin yellow-ish off-white head could be mustered up. This has a FANTASTIC aroma of caramels, BIG molasses, and stick candy. The flavors were quite medicinal, much like cough syrup, but moderated with the sweetness of hard candy. Bananas and lots of heat. The finish cannot subdue the big alcohol even though the beer is substantially thick. In my opinion, aging this beer for 5 years was a brilliant move on my part. If you are sitting on a bottle of this from 2003, drink up, my friend.

Pours a dark amber with a small tight off white head. Thick malty hard candy aroma with a hint of vanilla. Thick malty taste and very sweet. Strong of alcohol but a little too much sweetness for me to handle.

Dark orange gold in color, small head. Sweet syrupy alcoholic aroma with cloves and banana. Sweet malty candy taste with citrus fruit. Alcohol is very present, clean aftertaste. Nice beer.
