Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Pours medium amber, with a golden shine. What little head there is fades almost immediately. Aroma is strong alcohol, perhaps some fusels, and lots of fruity esters, with a little malt. Flavor is also alcohol up front, followed immediately by sweet malt and some hints of hops. Alcohol dries out the finish quite a bit, but not offensively so. A strong beer that tastes even more so, yet in a good way. A little harsh, which I don’t remember before. Wonder if it has changed. Perhaps they are fermenting it warmer to speed production?

You can taste the tannins in this! Strong malty and hoppy flavors, balanced by the tannins in whatever they aged this in. As far as American Belgians go, this is one of the best!

Wasn’t too enthused about this. Bottle from BevMo. Not a very round flavor, more hoppy than fruity - kind of a flat quad.

Jesus, this thing is hot, and dull bitter. Sooooo many fusels.... Tate is somewhat belgium-esque. Dark candy and dull, strange malting. Almost like boiled veggies. Can you tell I do not like this? The only reason I am finishing this bomber is because the undercard to the Mayweather v Hatton fight fucking sucks. Just like this beer. Wait, wait! As it warms it is starting to get less shitty. I actually taste some redeeming qualities to it. Shit. No. I am obviously drunk.

Grains, fruit, and yeast in the aroma. Clear orange color with a small white head. Bitter and sweet start with a mild alcohol burn in the finish. Lots of carbonation.

Definatly not the best of quads. Tasted more like a strong B. ale. Much lighter in color and not too much complexity. Tasted sweet more from the malts than from the candy sugar, strong alcohol presensce, a tad spicy.Finsihes a bit fruity (mangos and bananas). Not too bad, but its not a Quad!

Ok...maybe this is my fault. I started liking Quads in the spring (March to be exact) and had Westies, Rocheforts and St Bernardus so much that that is what I base my comparisons on. That being said, this doesn’t even look/taste/smell like the same style. Aroma of alcohol and spices with a bit of caramel malt. Pour was suprisingly light. You can’t see through the ones I am used to. This was a clear burnt orange with just a slight white ring for a head. Taste was extremely sweet and wet. Candy sugar, malt and a peppery hot kind of feeling on the tounge. Little carbonation. This isn’t a bad beer, but just not what my mind would process as a Quad. Snobby? Don’t know.

650 ml bottle, shared with StompBrockmore - pours a foxy amber with a small white head. Intensely sweet aroma - powdered sugar and some unidentifiable fruits in the mix. Flavour filled with yeasty spiciness and again VERY sweet and bready. Lots of sweet malts and a surprising amount of hops for a quad. This is a confused beer - I’d never call it a quad, but I’d call it good. Alcohol becomes present as it warms. Would be interesting to try after cellaring for a couple years, as it did seem kind of young.
