Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

650ml bomber, shared with VeloVampire - pours a clear but slightly hazy ruby shade with a small white head. Aroma is very fruity, with a lot of caramel sweet malt, a quite a pronounced hop character. Very hoppy for a Quad. Flavour is very sweet, though balanced, full of Belgian candy sugar, dark fruit, toffee. The finish is mildly hoppy, mildly bitter. Almost has a barley wine character more than a Quad. Not nearly as yeasty as a Belgian Quad. Booziness becomes more apparent as the glass warms but is otherwise very well hidden. Unique.

Poured a clear, dark copper red with little or no head to speak of. There was a distinct sweet aroma with an alcohol scent. It has a sweet taste with a distinct alcohol taste which leaves a bit of a spicy finish. There is a lot going on with the flavor from sweet to earthy to a subtle spice. Good all aroound flavor a really nice beer!

Burnt orange color, thick off white head. Nose is pretty sweet with a hint of alcohol. Apple cider, malted barley, brown sugar, dried fruit, and fresh oatmeal. Medium in body. Too much alcohol on the palate for the style. The flavors just dont compliment the 10% abv. Finishes quite bitter.

22oz. bomber. Pours a clear dark copper with a light white head and limited carbonation. Aroma is heavy on malted barley, caramel and rolled oats. The flavor of this beer is of sweet caramel, barley, yeast and brown sugar to finish. Mouthfeel is very silky and smooth. Really enjoyed this.

Pours a caramel color, much more like a IIPA than a quad. Nose is also more floral and hoppy than other quads. The flavor, however, is all quadruple. Definite brown sugar, toffee, and a tiny bit of dried fruit.

I initially passed this beer over, but tried it after a recommendation. I was pleasantly surprised...particularly by the sweetness. The caramel/toffee/general dark sugary sweetness takes the front, middle and finish of this beer, but its not an obnoxious sweetness. The other great thing is how well the alcohol is hidden, which may take you by suprise if you’re not paying attention. Definitely will add this beer to my everyday buy list.

Great beer. Lots of apples, especially in the aftertaste. Not cloying at all. Good beer.

Pours a really attractive golden amber red color that is pretty crystal clear... and a thin off white head leaves behind a ring of bubbles that just lingers on the surface a bit. The aroma was primarily an intense breadiness, loads of malty grainy sweetness... with lots of undertones of dried dark fruits (cherries, dates), with a definite candy sweetness, and something that reminded me of oatmeal cookies. Flavors were very sugary and malty up front, with some more complex fruity biscuity cookie-like notes coming through eventually. Then some sort of roasty smoky woodiness comes through. Maybe a hint of coffee and/or dark chocolate. And eventually a bit of the alcohol makes itself known. But there is a strange bitterness to it that doesn’t sit right with me. But still, this beer has a lot going on--pretty damn good stuff, possibly underrated. I will definitely drink this again.
