Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Pours clear amber and I got virtually no head off it. Very little lacing. Nose is super sweet and alcohol is heavily present. Taste is extremely thick on the mouth and you get a firm syrup flavor, which for me is a bad start. There are tones of alcohol and fruits, but overall it feels too syrupy on the mouth. Over time this is a characteristic I still can’t come to appreciate. This is a sipper, but not one I would run to the store to grab again. For a quad, I’d turn to the Rochefort 10 or most other quads over this one any day.

Thick hazy, sunburst orange. Flat pour with little head or carbonation evident. Rotting fruit/leaves aroma, toasty caramelization, molasses. Sweet, dougy, flowery flavor with lots of thickness. Quite a lot of maltiness in addition to the fruity yeast notes. Moderate to high bitterness, especially for the style. Smooth, funky finish, alcohol not very apparent. Nicely constructed malt here, but too heavy on the bitterness, sweetness and rotting fruit notes for my preference. There just seems to be a conspicuous lack of...anything compelling...for $6 and 10%.

YES YES! oh sinister minister you touch me like a choir boy. A great amber hue with pale light head. Aromas of dark candied fruits, malty sweetness, cereal. Aw the mouth feel is medium to heavy with caramel, sweet nuts, candy malts, and a delicious balance of hops caressing your tongue. Try cellaring this for a year or more. mmmmmmmmmmm!

Pours a black and orange body, depending on how you look at it. Head is white, thin, laces well, but is very low. Smells lightly of lemon, cotton, yeast, cranberry...very fresh. Taste is tangy, with bitter hops, sweet malt, evergreen pine, coriander spice, chocolate, lemon, pineapple, slight berry. Solid beer, high abv in aftertaste. Exciting beer, but I can see how purists of the style would not enjoy the hopiness.

On draft at some little BBQ joint in Seal Beach, CA. Really nice example of the style, a pleasant spice to cut the bigness that comes off drinkable and fantastic.

Poured from a bomber. Poured a nice golden-amber color with a small head that diminished quickly to a layer. Smell is nice, mainly sweet with notes of spices peaking through. Thick mouthfeel with just the right amount of carbonation. Taste is the same as the nose, with some fruit accompanying the spices in the taste. Quite sweet, but very nice. I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would.
