Zinister (1198), Houston, Texas, USA Jul 25, 2007 Updated: Apr 2, 2008Sadly when I took notes on this, but all I can find is my rating...however I remember enjoying it (as I do most Avery beers)....and several other beers after as well. cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 24, 2007 On tap at the Bocktown. Slightly darker than the ubiquitous pale yellow american lager beer. Has a little more orange to it. The head is composed of a thin layer of larger bubbles and smaller creamy foam. Barely has any aroma, perhaps I do smell a little candy sweetness in there. Initial taste is a little earthy and rather mild for a quad, hides the alky content well. After a few sips however, the alky bitterness and warming begins to accumulate. No warming down the throat but warming in the mouth. Barely any perceivable carbonation. Continued medium high malty bitterness builds with more sips. Body is mouth coating and approaches the feel of syrup. Tho I haven’t tasted many quads this is as good as Weyerbacher Quad and not as refined or enjoyable as 3 philosophers. Finish is medium length and rather alky. blklab2007 (932), Connecticut, USA Jul 22, 2007 Updated: Aug 28, 2009bottle poured into a pint glass amber in color , smell is of malt, fruit, sweetness, spice, and champagne yeast. taste is real nice, the yeast brings a nice dry champagne taste, dark fruits, sweet but not too much. has a nice dry taste and the alcohol was somewhat present but not overpowering. real solid beer overall but in my world could use a little more fruit. lovemyipas (420), sw burbs, Illinois, USA Jul 16, 2007 pours a clear dark orange with a one finger cream colored fluffy head. aroma is heavy Belgian yeast and heavy candy sugar with a touch of hops. has a medium body with good lacing and carbonation. flavor is the same as aroma. is a little sticky on the lips and has a little bite from the carbonation and hops. also has a small dry hop aftertaste. not to bad of a quad. also has a small alcohol burn in the nose, but there is none in the taste. however there is a little in the aftertaste and the back of the throat. has a little bit of yeast sediment floating around in the second glass. also is a little more sweet than the first glass as well. and there is a little alcohol flavor in the second glass. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jul 13, 2007 Clear orange to amberish with a thin small bubbled white head. Rather faint nose. some berry-like malty sweetness over alcohol. The general Belgian array of spices. cinnamon? Sharp toast? Low carbonation, not much body, thin. Much drier than I’d have guessed. Dry Belgian candy sugar. Light fruit. Strong alcohol. Toast. Some light spice, primarily cinnamon. A toasty finish with unexpected chocolate malt (given the rest of the beer). Boozy alcoholic finish. ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Jul 13, 2007 talk about bang for your buck. 4 dollar quad. pours a rich mahogney color with a small acidic head. Smells of fruits. Tastes like a dubbel with carmel notes .Cherries are presant too. Surprisgnly good, and refreshing as the alcohol is hidden. elmatador00 (518), j-action-ville, North Carolina, USA Jul 10, 2007 Pours a semi-dark brown color with a thin tan head. Has almost no lacing. Has hints of caramel, dark fruit, spice, candied sugar, and a good barley flavor. Finishes medium bodied with a sugary alcohol feeling on the tongue. drismyhero (815), Tacoma, Washington, USA Jul 7, 2007 Very overt belgain yeast - especially strong are the dried flower and fig or currant. I was surprised at just how compact this beer seems, a very dense beer that sits really well on the palate. I wasn’t as blown away by the candy sugar as I thought I would be, but the alchohol is definitely present here. A surprisingly good drinking beer.
