Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

On tap at The Taphouse. Pours a clear amber with an off-white head. Caramel, fruit and a touch of spice in the nose. Medium body and light carbonation. Sweet and surprisingly light taste dominated by butterscotch. Piney hops shine though in the finish and seem to quarrel a bit with the rest of the taste. I don’t see me finishing a bomber of this - glad I got it in a sampler.

Tried at Churchill’s pub in San Diego. Dark rich color and rich flavor beer, with a great flavor, little smell, sweet (I crave sweet beers). Gave it a 3.5, but maybe closer to a 3.0. 3.5 is my "buy again" threshold.

Bottle. Crystal clear amber with thin patchy head and very pretty lacing. It’s all in the nose with scents of apple, malts, hops caramel, cedar and alcohol. The cedar is more subtle in the flavor, but everything else is present and accounted for. Creamy with weight and dry finish. Who could ask for anything more?

Bottle: This beer is not as good as I remember it. I used to love it. It doesnt taste as rich as i seem to remember. Its a light amber in color and medium to light body. Fruit and malt aroma is good. The flavor has fruity esters as well as plenty of phenolics and spicy ester character. The alcohol is pretty subtle considering the body of the beer. This is just sightly more malty than a good triple. If this used some more dark crystal malts I would really enjoy it more. If your a fan of triples though, you will probaby really enjoy this.

sampled at avery: reddish brown pour with a tan head. nose of sweet fruit and belgian yeast. flavors push the same rock candy sweetness typical for the style, had this right after the ellies what a differnece...so much more sugar here. some subtle hints of alcohol in the backbone. there was a dry hopped version with centennial hops that was fricken great...huge grassy notes on top of a polished belgian beer (east meets west thing)

Pours out a reddish gold color. Smells sweet and a bit hoppy. Sweet taste with a bit of alcohol flavor in the aftertaste. A hit of bitterness. Smooth on the palate with a lingering aftertaste.
