Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Bottle. Pours reddish/amber. Carbonation seems light; it isn’t. Smells like apples. Taste is sweet, like caramel with a touch of sour apple. Quick finish. Delightful.

22oz bottle that pours a dark copper color with a thick tan head. 10% alcohol that goes down smooth at 4$. My new favorite.

22 oz bottle. Pours hazy golden color with white head. Sweat aroma of malt and honey. Taste of sweat malt a little alcohol bit at the end.

Pours a crystal clear copper-orange color under a fluffy and thick off-white head. Quite odd the see a Belgian Quad style beer so translucent without the typical haziness. Head dissapates quickly to some spotty blotches of foam. No lacing noted. Aroma is of rich, luscious ripe brandy soaked black cherries, figs, dates and raisins against a background of caramel, malt and spices. Mouthfeel is nicely balanced between the heavy, chewy, thick body and the overtly spritzy carbonation which keeps the texture from becoming too oily or slick. The flavor profile of this beer improved immensely as it warmed from its initial serving temp of 50*F. Taste was very sweet and rich with notes of Belgain candy and dark brown sugar along with caramel candy apples, raisins, dates, some faint banana and cloves and warming alcohol. Finishes with just a hint of hop bitterness to keep the sweetness in check. Goes down real easy for a 10%’er. Found these at a local upscale grocery market for $3.69/bomber so I picked up 10 of them. Makes it even that more enjoyable to get such a nice price on ’em.

I love this beer. Dark fruit in the nose along with alcohol, sour notes, and doughy maltiness. Sugary palate with no hint of alcohol other than the warming. Color is dark copper with an off-white head. Sticky finish. Very very nice.

Bomber. Nice clear amber with creamy head. Nice subtle spice, yeast and sweet malt aroma. Favor is similiar, with cherries. I was surprised at the sweetness of this, but it worked for me. Alcohol well hidden.

Feb. 28, 2007; 22 oz. bomber; purchased for $5.99 at Kraig’s Kegs, Sherrill, NY. Cidery apperance, one-finger head, respectable lacing. Surprisingly faint, yeasty aroma. Wouldn’t banish this from the cellar, but the sticky sweetness -- with too little else in the recipe to offset it -- is overpowering, making this brew rather one-dimensional. Never would have pegged this for a Quad in a blind taste test, and it certainly doesn’t hold a candle to my favorites of that style in terms of depth or complexity.

Moderate malty. Large creamy light brown head. Excellent lacing. Mostly diminishing longevity. Clear light, amber body. Moderate sweet iitial flavor. Medium palate. Oily texture.
