Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Pours a warm reddish with a generous off-white head. Somewhat earthy malt aroma with a bit of herbal hop bouquet. Big malt flavor carries a noticeable alcohol heat, a hint of hop bitterness. Pretty decent Quad.

22oz. Bottle: Aroma was heavily sweet. HInts of nutmeg of nutmeg and cinnamon make the aroma slightly spicy, but scent is dominated by plum/cherry/strawberry notes. Poured copper/amber in color with a medium-sized off-white head that lasted. Good lacing. Clear and sparkling. Flavor is very sweet and malty. Tastes a lot like Avery’s Salvation without the tart finish of that beer. There is a spiciness to the finish. Tastes of plums, prunes, cherries, and nutmeg. Medium body. Soft carbonation. Long, sweet finish. Overall, hides the 10% ABV well, and has an interesting flavor. I’ll have to try more Quads to compare it to.

Poured an orange, brown...medium sized head. Nice looking. Aroma of spice and brown sugar. Pretty good and different. Sweet, but did not find it overwhelmingly so. Flavor of yeast, candy sugar, spice and fruit. Good, but not great.

Poured a beautiful, deep amber with a perfect, off-white head. A knockout, delicious aroma of brown sugar and spices. One of the best aromas I’ve experienced in some time. Wow, is this stuff SWEET. Hit you in the mouth, knock you out of your chair, and call you "Susan" sweet. A bit too sweet. Ok, much too sweet. But as the mug disappears, it’s getting a bit more bearable and the alcohol is definitely asserting itself. It’s not at all well balanced. It hits you with the sugar assault up front, then a mild, yeasty middle, and finishing with a sour, leaning towards sickly alcohol bite. This seems more like a barley wine without the hops. This is a great beer until you taste it...ultimately and irreversibly flawed.
