RedHaze (370), Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA Jan 14, 2007 Pours a very dark, mostly clear ruby color, with a one finger head that settles very slowly to a thin cap, leaving behind a fine webbing of lace. After a little while the head disappears almost completely.
Smell; I smell sweet candied sugar right off the bat with some mild spices mixed in. There’s a very solid malt backbone, as well as, raisins, plums and a little alcohol.
Taste; as with the smell, the sweetness really jumps out at first with brown and candied sugar, but once it warms it’s not quite as pronounced. The fruits are there with raisins, plums and dates and finishes with a slightly subdued spiciness. Alcohol is felt more than tasted, but it’s presence is there in the background. The mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side for what I would expect for a quad, with a fairly low carbonation. Drinkability is pretty good for the big ABV. BrewerDub (34), USA Jan 13, 2007 Very BIG BEER. Pretty complex flavor on this one, poured very very dark brown almost black. Sweet smells with hints of fruityness and some spice as well as a nice lingering sweetness. I’m not really a fan of the Abt but this one was pretty darn good. Cellarable for 4 years?! I’m getting another one and stashin it. dyetube (397), Dallas, Texas, USA Jan 12, 2007 This beer pours a deep amber color with a medium tan head leaving no lacing down the sides. The nose on this thing is very silent... I’m getting some sweetness, but not a lot. This beer has a strong clove taste to it. That is weird. It is slightly sweet and malty though. Not all that bad of a beer for an american abt/quad, but it could be so much better! I expected more from Avery... Oh well... Cheers! rotoguru (93), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jan 10, 2007 Wow! So many expectations, so little results! On tap, served nice clear orange/amber (that is where the good news ends) with thin white head that settled to a thin film. Has faint olive juice nose that is also noticeable in the flavor which is saved slightly by sweet malty and mild spice notes; however it lingers on the palate. Given all of the good beer that was flowing (Duchesse, Avery Hog Heaven, and Odell TrailHead 10th Anniversary) I was shocked by this one. Given all of the positive reviews, Avery’s history for great beer, and a good reason to go back to Choice City, I’ll give this one a second chance next time... spector (906), Lancaster, Ohio, USA Jan 10, 2007 Aroma’s are of sweet malt and some spices.Pours orange with a small white head.Get some light fruit and yeast in the flavors.Mouthfeel is thin to medium with an earthy finish. smhncabot (310), Cabot, Arkansas, USA Jan 10, 2007 aroma sweet malt, banana and spice. flavor much the same and is almost excessively sweet. ok but not good. nimbleprop (819), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA Jan 3, 2007 Poured a translucent ruby color with orange hues with a thin off white head. Smells of malt and sugar with hints of bread and grain. Typical Abt flavor, malty but also yeasty flavor that overpower the more subtle flavors. Finish is balanced, sweet and clean. I don’t love the style and I thought it was average. TomDecapolis (3127), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 2, 2007 2005 bottle. Pours a very lightly hazy ruby orange/amber with an average creamy light tan head that had some bubbles and left some lacing. Aroma of leather, cherries, dark fruits, Belgian candi sugar, some Belgian yeast and other spices, very sweet toased malts with some nuts, vanilla and oak. Really a lot going on in the aroma on this one. Flavor of dark fruits, vineous, dark candy sugar, surprisingly still had some hop bitterness. A little thinner and actually not as sweet as I was expecting, but I kind of liked that about this one. I remember having a fresher bottle of this a year or two ago before I really started rating and I think the year plus of cellaring helped this one out.
