theReverend (3), USA does not count Dec 18, 2006 Creamy, off-white head, medium retention.
Amber colored body.
Clean sweet scent.
Taste is sharp, spicy at first. Smooth, malty finish.
Yeasty, a lot of malt, some alcohol, sweet syrupy middle.
With warming (as when bottle is left out while drinking) the after taste becomes somewhat sour, though not unpleasantly.
Not the thickest I’ve seen, but make no mistake, this is a hearty brew.
Sharpness makes it better for a tasting or occasion than for everyday drinking.
Also, I found an interesting hint of apple, like an unusually sharp and complex red delicious.
I had to rate this beer first for an obvious reason, but it also happens to be one of my favorites. The 1.6 bottle is good to split with a friend while discussing the existence of God(s). zootfinster (179), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 14, 2006 A nice dark amber appearing beer with a bit of cloudiness. A respectable head that dissipates a bit too quickly. A malty sweetish flavor. The the aftertaste is a little too malty but it is certainly a very full bodied beer, one you could consider a meal in itself, which I did, before I noticed the ABV is 10%. This might account for why it tasted better and better as I got to the bottom of the bottle MPA (478), Nørrebro(formerly Aalborg), Denmark Dec 4, 2006 Bottle. Amber with light off white head. Spices, lemon and bitter notes in aroma. Sweet flavour with caramel, nuts and alcohol. Quite full in body. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Dec 1, 2006 Clear copper body topped by a white ring. Aroma is alcohol and hops resin. Taste is overly sweet with an alcohol presence that feels even more than 10%. I think it is a bit fruity with a touch of caramel, I don’t know, alcohol was too overwhelming. Certainly not what I expect from an ABT, I don’t know what it was but it seemed as if there was a clash of styles or something. Decent beer, bad ABT. I don’t revere the Reverend. Reid (1084), Salem, Oregon, USA Nov 28, 2006 22 oz bomber poured into a large brandy glass, as my Chimay chalice is dirty.
Nice looking ruddy red/brown beer, clear with attractive carbonation. Gorgeous large thick light tan head.
Nice aroma of dark fruits, malts, some spice, cherries and demerara sugar.
Quite sweet ,but with bitter undertones,,papya fruit, kiwis come to mind, alcoholi in the finish, but mostly rich malt.Spiciness is there but slight.
Ok on the pallate, not great though.
Overall a goodish beer but not one that I can class as great.
Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Nov 27, 2006 Updated: Dec 1, 2007On tap at the Happy Gnome. Reddish orange hue with a shy head of foam, with some aromas of blonde brownies, caramel, and alcohol. Tastes staunchly hot, with plenty of dark sugar and molasses to go with a wheelbarrow of malt. In the end the alcohol presents too loudly and clumsily here, like the overweight relative who assumes his invitation to a family get-together is a license to gorge himself to his heart’s content, getting wasted for free all the while. He just won’t leave, and he ruins what might have been an otherwise pleasant experience. caesar (3020), Bunnik/Utrecht, Netherlands Nov 26, 2006 Clear orange color, short head. Hoppy aroma, caramel malty. Alcoholic taste, bit sweet, caramel, malty. Better than Avery Salvation, but still i expected more after tasting the Czar. bobaidan (358), Farmington, Connecticut, USA Nov 24, 2006 Updated: Dec 28, 2006Pours a clear amber with almost no head. Aroma is sweet with hints of caramel malt, yeast and some spice. Flavor follow the nose and is very sweet, but not in a bad way. I found the alcohol to be well hidden, though there is a definite burn as is goes down. Very good, but there are better quads.
