obguthr (986), Poquoson, Virginia, USA Jul 25, 2009 Yeasty nose with only faintest bit of malt and raisins cutting through. Cloudy orange with a few floaties, thin off white head. Full, syrupy mouthfeel. Sweet date syrup flavor with a bourbon edge. Faint woody notes. Not very good even if I did like quads. Micromax (8), Naperville, Illinois, USA does not count Jul 22, 2009 Nice frothy head when poured, about 1.5 fingers leaving nice lacing. Sweeter to the tongue than expected. Metallic finish was unexpected but didn’t hamper the experience. Will gladly drink again. MmmcKay (269), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA Jul 22, 2009 Not the finest Quadrupel I’ve ever had. Good effort by Avery, but just falls short. Before I go further, I will say that I tasted this next to a Trappistes Rochefort 10. Not a fair comparison. Not fair at all. Color is a reddish brown. Kind of ugly for a Quad. Much lighter in color than any Quad I’ve ever had. Alcohol balance however was the biggest flaw in this beer. The aroma burned at my nostrils. Alcohol flavor was considerable on the palette as well. Probably my least favorite Avery brew that I’ve had. I’m a big supporter of this brewery, but this beer falls short. I don’t see bottle age doing this beer any favors either due to the lack of balance.
Ok I gotta say something nice. The aroma of the brew is actually complex and pronounced if you can get past the alcohol. The sweet maltiness of the beer will fool a lot of people. It actually covers the alcohol pretty well if you’re not an experienced taster. Packaging is nice. I love the religious light and dark/ good and evil themes that Avery plays on.
hamsterglory (48), Bryan, Texas, USA Jul 8, 2009 better than expected. redder than expected. very sweet. very stern. settles in hard like a good swig of red clay. i like this. will buy it again. we bought it in a big bottle and poured it in little round wine glasses. that seemed fitting, if not perfect. perhaps i should brag more on my choice of serving glass than the actual beer. but the beer is why we’re here. so, buy it, ya know. i like it. deyholla (504), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jun 21, 2009 Bottle. Poured dark amber with a creamy head. Aroma was full of dark fruits and molasses/caramel. Flavor was nice and complex with fruitiness and other sweet aspects. Also a slight metallic after taste. ljay6880 (132), , Pennsylvania, USA Jun 19, 2009 12 OZ bottle served in a clear pint glass. Poured a cloudy copper with medium, fluffy white head. Nose is Belgian yeasts, molasses, and something else that’s sweet. It could be a light fruit or sugar, but I can’t put my finger on it. Taste is similar, but the sweetness and booze is very present. Neither one over the top, but a little much for my tastes with this particular brew. This beer was pretty good, but it isn’t memorable enough in any category to warrant another bottle. mansquito (819), Boston/Philadelphia, USA Jun 17, 2009 Thick white head and a dark ruby body... but it was dark in the bar. Dark fruit aroma is really what most of the aroma smells like. The beer itself is really heavy and sweet. Lots of fruity flavors dominate the taste. Molasses is in there as well. There is a liqueur taste... or maybe brandy or something. So the alcohol is disguised through that, but as other reviewers have noted it is certainly there. Thick and syrupy feel on the mouth. uhre (339), Denmark Jun 13, 2009 The beer has a copper colour with great head, but it goes away fast. The aroma is very dominated by the figs and prunes - very nice. The same goes with the flavor - nice caramel aftertaste.
