Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Sampled at an American Beer Tasting Event but unfortunately I forgot my notes. Clearly Belgian inspired but too sweet for a true top rating.

Mahogoney hues. Floral nose. Sugary sweet. Nice belgian style beer. Plenty of character. Takes more than one sip to get your head around this. A little more carbonization would be nice.

Pours a hazy medium orange with very little head. Aroma is heavy on the malt side, cookies and lightly floral, bubblegum and cherry esters. Flavor is moderatly sweet and lightly biter, sweet but more balanced in the finish. Medium bodied creamy and softly carbonated.

Not a lot of aroma. Very very smooth, almost to the point of being more creamy than spicy. Pretty malty throughout, but quite nice. Beer 13.

Bottle. Pours red/brown. Aroma of toffee. Complex flavor with a lot malt of sweetness, almost dessert wine, balanced with high bitterness. Surprisingly thin body.

Beer pours translucent amber topped by an off-white, frothy head that hangs around and laces the glass quite nicely. The nose is dominated a pineapple – not really what I expected from this beer. The palate is thicker than the pour indicated. Carbonation is pretty lively. The flavor was somewhat disappointing in the beginning – mildly yeasty with a bit of spiciness. Hard to discern much else initially, but it got better as it warmed.

Beautiful dark red with medium tan head. Aroma is sweet with sherry-like notes. Taste is bittersweet, with a hint cherries. Slightly medicinal twang to the aftertaste, but not bad at all.

22 oz. bottle on 10/20/06. Pours a dark amber with a large durable yellowish white head and excellent lace. A fruity, sweet aroma brings to mind cherries, prunes raisins, and honey. Smooth and lightly carbonated, medium/full body and a light stickiness on the palate. Sugary sweet flavor without much to dry it out, although there is some spicy hop notes to be found. Finishes sweet, but not cloying. This is pretty good, with a little more balance it would be great.
