Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Can definitely taste the sugar but it’s not overly sweet. Alcohol could be better disguised. Head is a little thin. But it is definitely a BIG beer, with lots of fruit and caramel, and the price is right. I will definitely be stocking up on these.

On tap @ Avery taproom. Sweet, boozy aroma. Not sure the official definition of ’cloying’, but I think it fits this one. really Sweet and vanilla-y, with a pronounced alcohol burn. One of my least favorite brews from one of my favorite breweries.

Flaske: Mørkeorange uklar. Ingen karbonering. Bid fra alkoholen og en meget lille smule humle. Krydret smag, ikke så fantastisk

Pours a clear copper color with no head. Aroma is alcohol, sugar, and cloves. Taste is dominated by sugar and caramel - in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever had a beer with such a pure caramel flavor. Alcohol is noticeable, but not annoyingly so. Prickly carbonation. Decent beer - it’s certainly drinkable, but not really outstanding or memorable, just big and very sweet.

Bomber on sale at my local liquor store. Aroma of grapes, caramel, vinous and sweet. A nice combination of dried fruit, alcohol and caramel. Amber-copper in color, very clear and a medium white head. Warming alcohol, sweet caramel with a burnt, toasted-wheat flavor. Some Belgian yeast character in the form of esters and a strong alcohol bite in the finish. Reminds me of a really, really strong dunkelweizen. Medium-light body, slightly creamy texture. Just a bit too boozy for my personal taste.

The aroma on this is sweet and cloying, as is its mouthfeel. Its palate is complex enough and full-bodied, but there are lingerings of bitter alcohol that do not make for the most pleasantness imaginable. On the whole, pretty solid brew, though also quite powerful and (perhaps overly) sweet.
