Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Bottle. Oranish pour. Light head. Very fruity aroma with some syrup and yeast. Lots of honey and bread. Flavor is wheaty, yeasty, fruity, alcohol and lightly spicy. Good.

Bottle. Nice cherry, apple and raisin aroma. Reddish brown color with small head. Very sweet raisin/cherry flavor with moderate hops that intensify after swallowing coupled with alcohol burn.

Golden tea coloured. Thin foam around the edges. Interesting light aroma of tea, spices, peach/appricot and sugar. Flavour is sugar, peach and moderate spices. In no way similar to the heavyweights of the style. Lighter, fruitier and heavy pepper. Lacks their complexity. A smaller sample is nice. A full bottle may get overbearing.

2003 vintage in the bomber bottle. Pours a mixture of purple, amber and red. Only a thin yellow-ish off-white head could be mustered up. This has a FANTASTIC aroma of caramels, BIG molasses, and stick candy. The flavors were quite medicinal, much like cough syrup, but moderated with the sweetness of hard candy. Bananas and lots of heat. The finish cannot subdue the big alcohol even though the beer is substantially thick. In my opinion, aging this beer for 5 years was a brilliant move on my part. If you are sitting on a bottle of this from 2003, drink up, my friend.

Small white head. Deep chestnut brown body. Sweetish banana aroma with notes of wood and spices. Taste is similar, but has smoky notes and is perhaps a touch watery. Still a very good beer. (Bottle.)

(bottle sampled at Stockholm Beer Festival) Orange colour with a creamy tan coloured lace. Smooth and malty aroma of toffee, butter, nuts, yellow plums and fresh baked bread. Thick and oily flavour of biscuit, chocolate, almonds and bread. Sweet warming aftertaste.

Can be cellared for four years yet the bottle states "refrigerate." I did both. I had the bottle for nine months, and it has been refrigerated for the last two. The aroma begins with yeast, followed by yeast and then sweet malt. The appearance is very dark, slighty hazy orange with only a few bubbles. The simple taste is good but unremarkable. Sweet and sugary, light fruit, yeast; Belgiany. They could have done more with it; perhaps too many different malts dulled what would have been different characteristics, like when you mix several colors and get brown. There are too few beers of this style and it is great that Avery attempted this one. But they need to change the recipe and add some complexity to this simple beer made in a style that lends itself to complexity.

Pours with a quickly dissapearing, off-white head covering a copper body. Aroma is of spices, sugar, banana and cherries. Tastes of anice, spices, deep quad with possibly some coriander and banana. Mouthfeel is a bit too fizzy.
