Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Clear copper pour with a thin white head, it seems quite pale for an Abt/Quad. Aroma of alcohol, mint and malty sweetness. Flavor of alcohol, mint and caramel with a sweet finish. The mouthfeel is liquorous and the carbonation is soft. What a letdown, I thought I bought a rich and complex beer but all I got is a cheap imitation of a belgian Abt/Quad.

Pours with a quickly dissapearing, off-white head covering a copper body. Aroma is of spices, sugar, banana and cherries. Tastes of anice, spices, deep quad with possibly some coriander and banana. Mouthfeel is a bit too fizzy.

Bottled, UDRBG. Aroma of caramel malt and some fruity hops. Clear, copper coloured with a thin lace. Taste is sweet, alcoholic. American hops used, sugar, caramel and some fruit. Full body, sticky mouthfeel. Not even close to the belgian quadrupels.

Surprised I haven’t had this one yet (or have I?). Dark copper color with a thick orange/brown head. Pretty good lacing. The aroma is mostly yeast along with some grapefruit and spice. Rich body, and despite not being as complex or flavorful as the best-of-breed in the style it is still enjoyable for the most part. The yeast flavor is at the forefront again, with spice and peppery alcohol undertones. There is a bit of sweet malt hiding in there too. The finish is dry and spicy with a slow alcohol burn. Overall this is a pretty solid brew.

Clear copper body topped by a white ring. Aroma is alcohol and hops resin. Taste is overly sweet with an alcohol presence that feels even more than 10%. I think it is a bit fruity with a touch of caramel, I don’t know, alcohol was too overwhelming. Certainly not what I expect from an ABT, I don’t know what it was but it seemed as if there was a clash of styles or something. Decent beer, bad ABT. I don’t revere the Reverend.

Candied malt aroma with some mixed fruit. Clear orange/amber, with a custard head. Malt and hops flavour combine with a sweet candied taste. Strong alcohol, but nice. Thanks Radek!

Bomber. Pours a deep ruddy mahogany with a big moussy tan head that doesn’t really stick around. Good grief, that’s an intensely melon-y nose--serious cantaloupe fragrances. Some light red delicious apple notes there, too. Medium body and moderately high carb. Plenty of caramel in the attack and throughout the palate, right to the finish. Bits of herbal hop at the end. Between the great label and the unique nose, I was getting pretty excited, but this turns out to be just OK in the end. Just OK for Avery and the style that is; it’s still on the high side of drinkable without a doubt.

Vibrant amber-red clarity. Fruity nose (apples). Chewy, low-carb mouthfeel. Sugar-coated, hard-candy, cooked-caramel sweetness, but not too sweet. Subtle fruit notes (apple sauce, pear, banana). Light, wholesome bitterness in the finish. Clean, slightly dry finish. Alcohol notes offer a nice nip.
