Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Clear amber brown, thin cream coloured head with little lace. Sweet aroma of cane sugar, wood, and fruit. Overly sweet palate with a phenolic bourbon-barrel quality that I didn’t care for, and none of the yeasty, spicy, or soft fruit elements that make true Abt/quads so complex and enjoyable.

Clear copper color with nice tan head. It pretty much dissipated to nothing with no lacing before long. Belgium yeast, sweet malts and fruitiness was the aroma. The flavor was spicy, peppery, fruity (cherries) and malty with no sense of the 10% ABV. Really easy drinking for a quad Belgium.

This is like drinking a big glass og candi sugar, with a side of cotton candy. This quad is very upfront about its flavors, lots of alchohol in the aroma and the taste. Nice creamy body, with a wonderful silky mouthfeel. Highly enjoyable.

Bronzy Coppery Orange. Thin, tan head. Strong apples and cinnamon aroma. Taste of sweet fruit, vanilla, cinnamon, and some ginger. Nice Oily texture gives way to a woodsy, dryish finish. Nice brew, the alcohol is well hidden, but overall seems too sweet. Maybe I drank it too young, I think some age would enhance this nicely.

I just wasn't that impressed with this. Pours nicely as a amber-hued, slightly oily/syrupy beer with a completely dissipated head. The aroma just screams candy sugar, and though there were some decent caramel, malty aromas, it didn't suggest depth, and indeed, the flavor didn't have it. There were some raisin and fruit veins amid the caramel, along with an acidic burn at the back of the throat, and some basic flavors that are really just English bitter/pale ale on steroids. Decent palate is provided by carbonation at first and the sweet acidity later. This just lacked depth and had a couple of hard edges that didn't suit it well. Oh well, it was certainly decent and well worth the try.

Bomber; Nose of caramel malts, yeast, and licorice; copper colored with a big, glass-lacing beige head; flavor of sugar, dark fruit, caramel malt, and spices, especially cloves.

Bottle. Amber-red. Hazy. Little head. Sweet aroma: honey, brown sugar, pineapple, toasted coconut like a macaroon. Really sweet body. Sweet buns, caramel, more macaroon. Bread pudding. Caramel. Dessert. Not bad; not my thing.

22oz. Bottle: Aroma was heavily sweet. HInts of nutmeg of nutmeg and cinnamon make the aroma slightly spicy, but scent is dominated by plum/cherry/strawberry notes. Poured copper/amber in color with a medium-sized off-white head that lasted. Good lacing. Clear and sparkling. Flavor is very sweet and malty. Tastes a lot like Avery’s Salvation without the tart finish of that beer. There is a spiciness to the finish. Tastes of plums, prunes, cherries, and nutmeg. Medium body. Soft carbonation. Long, sweet finish. Overall, hides the 10% ABV well, and has an interesting flavor. I’ll have to try more Quads to compare it to.
