Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

66 cl bottle. Amber colour with a weak head. Sweet aroma of caramel, toffee and hops. Great taste of caramel, toffee, chocolate, alcohol and some sweetness. Reminds me of a English barley wine.

bottle at brewtopia - I was expecting great things from this beer, but was a bit disappointed - quite barleywineish, in fact, I don’t detect a lot of belgian characteristics at all - lots of sugar ( a bit cloying actually) - tries hard at being balanced, but doesn’t quite make it - tasty to a point.

This is good stuff, and as good as any Belgian Quad that I have had. The aroma first hits you with candy sugar then a complex mixture of yeast, bread, dark fruit, and spice. The flavor is exactly like the aroma but with more alcohol than detectable from the aroma. The palate is almost sticky from the sugar. I think I would have named it the pope, bishop, or priest based on the style but that’s just me. This is highly recommended!

What a beautiful site is this transpicuous mahogany colored elixir of life setting in my glass, the modest and creamy head all cutesy and light tan in color, with a silky coating of lace, to end the visual portion of the sampling. Fusel alcohol, sweet caramel, malt, fresh and clean, a superb nose with the start thickly malt, sweet, the top full and rich in its feel to the palate. Finish has a delightful hop presence, the carbonation delicate and the aftertaste quite dry. The high ABV makes itself known as a nice “Belly Warming Feel”, and a touch of bitterness in the aftertaste, hearty and robust and a must try for the “Bad Boys and Girls” in the audience.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 12 April 2008) Reddish amber colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with dried fruit, caramel and floral notes of roses. Malty taste with notes of dried fruit, strawberries and red-currant. Full body, really sweet. Nicely balanced and tasty, maybe slightly too sweet, but still a nice beer.

Dark orange beer with a disappearing head. Sweet and sticky aroma of raisins, fruit, citrus and tones of alcohol. Malt, bread and raisin flavor. Sharp and sparkling and quite alcoholic. All right, but would probably gain some after a while of storage!

Hazy caramel color with a thin light brown head. Aroma of caramel and lots of fruit. Sweet fruit with some hints of spice. Alcohol is fairly well hidden.

Positively one of the best aromas I’ve ever smelled. It was apple pie. Pure apple pie. Apples, cinnamon, and sweet dough; so delicious. The taste was similar though was spicier and exhibited a strong alcohol kick that kind of bogged it down. But I’ll be god danmed if it didn’t smell absolutely amazing. Food pairing: apple pie.
