Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Dark orange pour. Strong malt aroma and some hops as well. Taste is quite strong in the alcohol department but balanced. Some spiciness in there as well. The hops were present throughout and made me think this really was an American interpretation of a Belgian style beer. Surprisingly very quaffable as well. Not overly complex, but really nice overall - glad I had a chance to try it.

Tap at Barcade: Copper/amber pour with decent clarity and an off-white head. Sweet nutty aroma with mild dried fruit. There’s also that brown sugar and fig with some Belgian-y esters. The flavor starts nutty and toasted, with decent character. Then it becomes a homogeneous sweet mess of raisin and candied sugar. Not much depth. Although it started a bit tasty, the finish isn’t balancing.

Bottle: Sweet banana aroma. Transparent amber with a white head. Lots of banana in the flavor that intensifies in the finish. Some citrus in the background. Light alcohol in the finish.

Appearance: Pours a crystal clear, orangey-amber body with a well-formed, light beige head. Smell: Toasted nuts and bread followed by a distinct yeastiness and notes of sugar and alcohol coated fruits. Taste: Sweet, bready maltiness with a caramel and honey sweetness jacked up by plenty of candi sugar. A tad yeasty. Peach schnapps soaked fruit flavors of fig and dried cherries. The tiniest pinch of nutmeg. Spicy hops with a medium, resilient bitterness that joins the various other flavors bouncing around the palate. Very faint wood component. Finishes sweet, fruity, and quite warming. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Slight stickiness to the mouthfeel. Drinkability: A fine, respectable attempt at the style, but comes up a bit short when stacked against the superior Belgian examples. Still though, it is an enjoyable sipper from the good folks over at Avery.

Bottle had a pinkish foil as opposed to the red I dee on most of the bottles. Pours to a clean redish body with a lasting thick creamy white head in the proper glassware. The aroma is yeasty, Belgian sugars, molasses, light bing cherries and dark plums. The flavor is sweet, molasses, light vanilla, yeasty, burnt sugar, some sort of dark fruits. The palate is lightly warming, pretty smooth tasting. A pretty decent brew, but a little overly sweet.

My 2300th. From bomber shared with my wife. Light alcoholic vapors, fruity in character with cherry wood and blossoms, craisins, and maple sugar. Sweet fragrant nose with some unfermented sugar tang. Light hop notes. Coppery amber clear body with thin off-white lacing head. Medium-heavy body, not chewy but not watery either. Carbonation is fairly low, but still gives just a bit of carbonic tang. Alcoholic warming on this one. Starts pretty sweet, with brown sugar, maple and cherry wood, alcohol and some phenols. Light raisin with some vanilla. Still pretty hot, this one, though drinkable. Finish is sweet, not sticky, with an underlying dry bitter character. Not hoppy, but not overly sweet. After is dull sweet with lingering alcohol.

Aroma was of the malt variety. Each time stuck the nose in the beer got a different aroma, talk about complex. Body was a dark copper with an off white decent head and good lacing. Got the complex and balanaced flavor of spicy, sweet and roasted malts with an alcohol finish. Smooth on the palate a good beer.

Not a lot of aroma. Very very smooth, almost to the point of being more creamy than spicy. Pretty malty throughout, but quite nice. Beer 13.
