Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Not a lot of aroma. Very very smooth, almost to the point of being more creamy than spicy. Pretty malty throughout, but quite nice. Beer 13.

Spicy cinnamon nose with some dark fruits supported by alcohol. Tall foamy head - fizzy and lacy - with a deep ruby color - gorgeous! Heavy syrup and fig malt base. Some toastedness and caramell. The spicy end is the highlight of the profile - cinnamon and some pepper. Medium body and a warm round mouth feel accented by the strong lcohol. Complex, but there is something very straightforward about this.

Ruby-amber colour. Boozy cotton candy aroma. Flavour is quite bitter with harsh alcohol notes and a sugary background. I’m not sure of the age of the bottle I sampled, but I’d suspect that it could’ve done with a bit of aging to mellow it out.

Copper coloured body with a light orange/red tint. Very thin off-white head. Aroma of peaches, alcohol, pears and malt. Full-bodied; Sweet initial flavour with caster sugar, peaches but then overshadowed by malt and an alcoholic burn. Aftertaste clean in comparison to the taste, but some alcoholic flavour remains. Overall, a good beer, but not pleasing for the style-nice to try however! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased by my sister's fiance at Norm's in Vienna, Virginia on 25-December-2003.

22 oz bottle, via X-mas 2006 SecretSanta. Pours a clear dark copper under an extremely thin and fizzy light beige head that vanished immediately. Are we sure that this is a Quad? Aroma is of syrupy thick toffee and caramel malt with a good amount of alcohol. A little vanilla, some light fruitiness, and brown and candi sugars. Flavor is just downright crazy for a Quad. Sweet toffee maltiness with lots of alcohol and browm sugar. I guess that there’s a little fruitiness, but not the dark fruits I expect, more of a peachy flavor. A notable missing component is the yeast. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy with a cloying stickiness. Carbonation is moderate, prickly, and fizzy. I dare anyone to try this blind and call it a Quad. It just wouldn’t happen. What the hell is Belgian about this other than the use of candi sugar?

On tap at Barley’s Smokehouse - Pours dark amber with a short offwhite head. Aromas of candi sugar, raisins, caramel, and a touch of apple. Flavor is caramel, candi sugar, raisins, a touch of mollasses, and brown sugar. Lots of sweet flavors here. Body is almost sticky sweet and pretty full bodied.. Not much carbonation.

On tap GABF 02: Dark hazy orange color, huge sweet aroma, syrupy mouthfeel. Ends really sweet. I couldn't get anything out of this but sweetness. A re-rate candidate for sure.

22oz bottle, foolishly purchased. Pours a bright, clear ruby-orange color; light-tan head with glistening fine-bubbled lacing. Stale malts, chewy dried fruits, and boozy leather in the aroma; highly alcoholic for the amount of aroma. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: sticky candy sugar, cardboard, and chewy, ridiculously sticky maltiness; unbalanced and just remarkably sweet without much character or malty complexity. Very, very disappointing, though I should know better. Lengthy, sticky finish: cardboard, chewy malts, cereal, and basic sugar. Not very good at all.
