Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

22oz, part of our blind "Better Know a Style: Abt/Quadrupel" tasting, pours small white head that didn’t last long, a clear amber. aroma is nutty, yeasty, cheese, banana, grape, peach, butterscotch, and maple syrup. flavor is pretty sweet, with notes of banana, peach, and plum. alcohol in the finish. finished second to last out of 9.

Poured orangey amber with barely any head at all (might’ve been a touch too cold, but not that much)...smells a little a touch citrus, then sugar and alcohol, maybe some earth fruits...tastes very thin and watery up front, then artificially sweet and alcohol with a thick spicy, syrupy, alcohol after taste...not bad, but it really does bear a striking resemblance to a bad barely wine, not a fantastic Belgian...

Poured an orange, brown...medium sized head. Nice looking. Aroma of spice and brown sugar. Pretty good and different. Sweet, but did not find it overwhelmingly so. Flavor of yeast, candy sugar, spice and fruit. Good, but not great.

Bottle; tasted at River’s Bend - Thanks Matt! Clear, deep amber color. The alcohol is farily pronounced in both the aroma and taste of this beer. Lots of malt and fairly heavy on the palate. Flavor also reminds me of a sweet Irish Whiskey for some reason as did the finish. It also had hints of burnt sugar in the flavor. Over all it was quite tasty, but I was somewhat disappointed that the alcohol was so forward and not more hidden. Maybe laying this one down for a few years would help it mellow out and enable the flavors to become more refined.

Bottle. A ruby amber color with a laced tan head. A spicy, clove/orange, sweet caramel aroma. A smooth enjoyable flavor and easy on the palate. The alcohol is extremely well hidden. A candy like flavor. Not too complex but enjoyable to drink.

Appearance: clear, ripe garnet hue, with a slight, but sure, head of off-white, nearly green foam atop. Aroma: again, ripe is the right word, pungent, strong, intensely fruity, (grape, cherry, peach). Taste: big flavor, bold fruitiness, immediate alcohol presence. Unfortunately, this all dies down rather quickly, and the rest of the brew lacks any real bite, the bright and dazzling initial promise has faded for sure. ABV feels heavy, palate is substantially weighed down, but that’s merely temporary, for it thins out too fast. Fruit flavor is dominant, and the 10% becomes hotter as the glass empties. This is one of my favorite styles of beer, and I’m glad that Avery took a valiant stab at producing their version, but it lacks a lot in the complexity department, something a beer of this type should never suffer from. Not perfect, but not too terrible, either...though it ended up; tasted more like whiskey than beer by the end of the bottle!

Rather nice, if straightforward in nature. Pretty brown with a ruby tint, moderate head fades away rather quickly. Aroma is of Belgian candy sugars. The flavor is beery molasses, with some malty bittersweet chocolates and mild hoppy bitterness. Quite sweet, but not cloying, and the yeast stays nicely muted in the background. Quite well done, good depth of flavor, but a bit one dimensional.

Buttery fishy caramel yeat banana aroma. Kind of weird. Perfectly transparent copper with an average off-white head. Very peppery and spiced up to start giving way to banana and yeast notes. Finish has some more spices in it. In not a fan of this "quadruppel". Certainly not even close to being Belgian. Thanks to Ecvich for letting me try this!
