Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Brewtopia’04. Not a huge aroma, mostly alcohol and black cherry. Thick and chewy beer with lots of fruit salad, heavy sugars, some grapeskin. Yummy.

Brandy color and very light carbonation making this beer seem to deviate from style. Aroma of vanilla and other alcohol notes. Some woody, cognac flavor with apparent alcohol, candy sugar sweetness and flavor, plus some light hops. This one definitely provides some belly burn and considerable residual sugar. Would appeal to me more if sweetness was pared down a bit. Seemed better in the past.

A dark yellow/gold color with a modest head. Honey and molasses on the nose with a sweet spicy flavor.

I had this the other night during "Trappist Night" and it suffered in my mind because of it. I’ve had this before and thought highly of it, but the recent consumption of several Belgian All Stars made this beer look oafish and fumbling by comparison. There was something coppery in the taste and the sweetness seemed forced and very un-smooth. I think as an exercise in big beer this is probably a success, but as a Belgian style Quad it’s about as subtle as shotgun blast.

Bottle. This is a young batch. Big malty nose, with caramel and cherry and figs. Deep amber pour with a large foamy, tiny-bubbled beige head and medium-strong carbonation coming right up the chute. Big malty taste with a prominent alcohol component. Dries out toward the end, aftertaste is somewhat caramellous. Fullish body, a bit too boozy.

Poured clear copper/amber, with a medium off-white head. The aroma portended mediocrity: coriander, apple, and musty, slightly tangy fruit. This sub-stellar assemblage met again in the flavor, which was dominated by spicing (coriander, pepper, clove?) with pear and sweet vaguely caramelesque malts. Alcohol was noticeable too. After trying The Beast, this falls far, far short for Avery. Not very complex or exciting, the spiciness instead borders on the offensive.
