Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Pours a slightly hazy brown with a small off white head. Very fruity aroma, a lot of malts, berries, and a touch of caramel. Big sugar and sweetness to this beer. Very malty with some cinnamon and dark fruits. Maybe a little too fruity and too light bodied. i’d like to see some more body, this feels more like a dubbel than a quad to me. Still decent though.

22oz bomber, no date. Pours a crystal orange red with a small light beige head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, sugary sweet malts, some spices, some molasses and brown sugar, a little raisins and bananas. A small amount of bitterness for just a moment, buttloads of sweetness throughout. Otherwise, how it smells. Definitely full bodied, with some alcohol burn (not too bad though) and light carbonation. Good beer.

Copper currency. Rich, doughy malts, sweetened fruits, sugars and yeast in the aroma, giving a hint of peanut butter and bubble gum. Perhaps a hint of herbs in the aroma as well. Phenolic and fairly subtle tasting, with a light flavor overall considering its style and potency as well as several strange flavors, including plastic. Bright, spicy yeast flavors, with hints of cinnamon. The flavors are not really cloying like it is for some folks, but it isn’t as juicy and flavorful as the best Quads.

Sample taste at <a href=http://www.chibeer.org>Chicago Beer Society meeting & Randy Mosher birthday party, Dec. 1. I should oughtta know better than take rating notes at a homebrew club meeting. Ya end up with vague impressions and hard to read notes as the evening goes on. Nevertheless: Found it to be a very dark brownish orange, darker than other beers of this style. Ruddy complexion and a nice smell. Taste gives a hint of light strawberries before the Belgian sugar takes over. Yup, sugar, sugar and more sugar waiting to turn into alcohol.

Clear, mahogany pour with a rocky head and nice spotty lacing. Coriander or clove, yeast, some fruits, maybe bitter orange, and some alcohol in the nose. Flavor is mostly composed of the spices mentioned before, some more of the bitter orange, some yeast, a touch of earth, and alcohol. Sweet malts in the flavor as well. Fairly thick body, thin syrup palate and finishes with citrus and bitter hops.

Sits a surprisingly light colored luminiescent ruddied orange, with coarse carbonation and absolutely no head. Aroma is a faint wasp of sweet malt and light belgian yeast. Flavor is a flaccid and highly alcoholic sherry and raisins. Damn, this is dissapointing and TERRIBLE for the style. It’s just sweet malt and raisins, blasted with lots of hot plain alcohol. No depth, texture, or character. Palate is sugary and burning. I’m gonna do it, I’m gonna drain pour this sorry excuse for a Belgian beer.

Ok...maybe this is my fault. I started liking Quads in the spring (March to be exact) and had Westies, Rocheforts and St Bernardus so much that that is what I base my comparisons on. That being said, this doesn’t even look/taste/smell like the same style. Aroma of alcohol and spices with a bit of caramel malt. Pour was suprisingly light. You can’t see through the ones I am used to. This was a clear burnt orange with just a slight white ring for a head. Taste was extremely sweet and wet. Candy sugar, malt and a peppery hot kind of feeling on the tounge. Little carbonation. This isn’t a bad beer, but just not what my mind would process as a Quad. Snobby? Don’t know.
