Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Ok...maybe this is my fault. I started liking Quads in the spring (March to be exact) and had Westies, Rocheforts and St Bernardus so much that that is what I base my comparisons on. That being said, this doesn’t even look/taste/smell like the same style. Aroma of alcohol and spices with a bit of caramel malt. Pour was suprisingly light. You can’t see through the ones I am used to. This was a clear burnt orange with just a slight white ring for a head. Taste was extremely sweet and wet. Candy sugar, malt and a peppery hot kind of feeling on the tounge. Little carbonation. This isn’t a bad beer, but just not what my mind would process as a Quad. Snobby? Don’t know.

Clear, mahogany pour with a rocky head and nice spotty lacing. Coriander or clove, yeast, some fruits, maybe bitter orange, and some alcohol in the nose. Flavor is mostly composed of the spices mentioned before, some more of the bitter orange, some yeast, a touch of earth, and alcohol. Sweet malts in the flavor as well. Fairly thick body, thin syrup palate and finishes with citrus and bitter hops.

Pour is a red looking with a nice size white head. Aroma is deffinatly candi sugar to start then comes some toffee caramel and a dark fruit. Flavor is nice! Super sweet with loads of candi sugar. A nice sourness follows with a almost red wine like quality. After taste is more dark fruit with a touch of dark chocolate and molasses. A well done beer!

22 oz. bottle. Pours a gorgeous red-amber color - like the red sky of a Colorado sunset - with a foamy white head. Aroma is sweet, yeasty with a noticible alcohol nose. Also features the distinctive Belgian malt smell along with spices, citrus and dried cherries. Flavor is rich and complex - delicious actually - like a rum soaked fruit cake (the kind that you actually like and eat rather than the kind that you send off to your relatives the following year), cherries jubilee and apricot syrup all together in one mouthful. Palate is thick, syrupy, smooth and lightly carbonated. Overall a wonderful brew. One of my favorites to this point, I'm signing up for this Reverend's religion!

Decent head of fine bubbles. Almost no carbonation though. Unlike most other quads I have had. Light aroma without much substance. Some fruit (grapes) and hint of wheat. Sweet malts with plenty of caramel and raisins. Small aroma burst upon swirling. No alcohol presence in the aroma. Color is a very nice dark mahagony/orange. Alcohol in the flavor makes the lips tingle. Some more fruit and a bit sweet. Very warming as the alchol kicks in. Thin palate unlike the dense mouthfeel of most belgian quads. Finish is sweet and slightly sour but not too bad. I do not think that this is a good example of a quad but still a beer that will help you sleep at night. Rerate a little higher the second time. Needs to be a little denser and a thicker palate.

Pours a medium dark reddish amber color. Aromas of dark fruit, caramel, and some spice. Flavors are sour cherries, and some spice. Alcohol really dominates.

Sampled at Sunset Grill & Tap in Allston, amber color, with a white head, grainy note in the nose, with a hint of peaish smokiness and a malty accent, dark fruits fruitiness, sweet molasses in the aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate with a yeasty, sweet caramelized malt, bready dough character, brown sugar, dark fruits, with an alcoholic warmth note, leading towards a sweet smooth warm finish.

Pours gold into a Trappist glass. Head quickly recedes to hug rim. Sweet malt aromas. Banana upfront with a dried pit fruit middle and a lasting sweet alcohol burn.
