Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Sampled at Sunset Grill & Tap in Allston, amber color, with a white head, grainy note in the nose, with a hint of peaish smokiness and a malty accent, dark fruits fruitiness, sweet molasses in the aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate with a yeasty, sweet caramelized malt, bready dough character, brown sugar, dark fruits, with an alcoholic warmth note, leading towards a sweet smooth warm finish.

Bottle. Pours a dark red/orange with a pretty one finger beige head with full glass lacing. Nose is hoppy, spicy and sweet. After smelling it, I thought that the first sip would be very powerful, and thankfuly it was not. The flavor is complex, but I will try to describe it: The first flavor notes that I pulled out was black pepper, sweet malt, currants, and hops. Secondary flavors are of alcohol, caramel, maybe a slight black cherry/raisin taste. The finish is slightly drier and burns just a little going down. I’ll be honest, after smelling this beer I thought that this would be an overpowering spicy beer. But I was wrong. This is an almost perfectly balanced hand crafted beer. The taste reminds me of a Dali painting: I can’t describe it, but it is most definately a thing of beauty.

Red-orange body with white head that disappears quickly. Some berry scent in the nose with spice and citrus. Flavor is sweet and syrupy. Very rewarding.

22oz from Whole Foods, Raleigh. Amber pour, nice frothy head, and an overall resemblance to Maharaja, at least visually. Sweet sticky malts dominate the aroma, with just a bit of spice in the nose. The taste is slightly boozy, which combines with the malts to make this a bit aggressive. Spicy hops make for a long, lingering finish. Funny, but it seems more like an American strong ale than a quad.

When I poured this big bad boy, I was overwhelmed how much like character it has in it. A beautiful Copper with an off-white head. Taste of Candy sugar, honey, cloves. Plus its strong as Hell!! I don’t think I can finish it because I’ll asleep before I do Another Winner from Avery

Bottle at Købehavnske Øldage 2006. Pours a clear dark yellow with a white head.. Sweet with moderate sourness. Aromas of fruits, apples, yeast and alcohol. Nice fullness. Alcohol in the finish.

golden orange, nice fluffy head. Malty, corriander, dark fruits & alcohol nose. Tart, rasiny flavor. Vaguely buscuity (?) - nice and fruity. This is good but almost overkill - I’d rather have an Ommegang.
