Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Tried at Churchill’s pub in San Diego. Dark rich color and rich flavor beer, with a great flavor, little smell, sweet (I crave sweet beers). Gave it a 3.5, but maybe closer to a 3.0. 3.5 is my "buy again" threshold.

On tap at the Oldsmar Tap House. Pours a deep amber color with a thin white head that provides lacing on the glass. Aroma is sweet, malty, nuts (sweet pecans?) with notes of fruit and a little spice. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of candy, caramel, syrup, and maybe a touch of molasses. Medium to full body with a sweet and malty, caramel finish.

Pours amber with a mostly receding light tan head. Aroma of apples, raisins, toffee, and caramel. Taste is sweet and phenolic with notes of apples, plums, toffee, and alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy bodied and slightly sticky with lush carbonation.

From a 22 oz. red foil capped brown bottle with a blurb along the right side of label, sampled at cellar temperature in a chalice. Poured a cloudy amber orange with a foamy, bubbly topped beige head that settled into a thin, bubbly lacing, minimal amount of sticking. Aromas of malted barley, candied sugar and plum and cherry fruitiness, spices and earthy, lemony hops, the alcohol is there, but well masked. Good carbonation and a crisp, dryish, sipping, syrupy smooth full bodied mouthfeel. Lush and delectable tasting, roasted barley mixed with Belgian candied sugar, spicy, plum and dark cherry juicy, an earthy, seedy and citrus hoppiness, soft in it’s bitterness, the alcohol is subtle and warming, an sweet alcohol flavor makes an appearance towards the end and a dryish sweet, earthy spice, malty finish, a good sipping drinkability. A nice quadrupel from Avery, it’s strength kind of sneaks up on you, well worth trying.

(on bottle) Clear, rusty red with a white head. Aroma is of slightly rotten peas and dark sugar.. Superperfect carbonation along with a really complex tasteprty from the estes, fresh leaves, dirt and mash. Finish? Goes on for ever...

Red with slight orange hint. Poured with a bit of head but faded quick. Nose was beery-malt. Very little fizz. Alcoholic sweet, No complexity.

honey colored beer with an off white ring for a head. really sweet aroma... smells of honey, brown sugar, fruit/bananas, wood and booze. the palate is quite sweet and hot and not really worth sipping half a glass or so. the flavor is the same as the aroma with a little spiciness and a dry yeasty finish. it really lacks any personality. medium body with a rather sticky mouth feel. this does however, make a good glaze for caramelized pears...
