Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

On tap at the Happy Gnome. Reddish orange hue with a shy head of foam, with some aromas of blonde brownies, caramel, and alcohol. Tastes staunchly hot, with plenty of dark sugar and molasses to go with a wheelbarrow of malt. In the end the alcohol presents too loudly and clumsily here, like the overweight relative who assumes his invitation to a family get-together is a license to gorge himself to his heart’s content, getting wasted for free all the while. He just won’t leave, and he ruins what might have been an otherwise pleasant experience.

Light brown with a big fluffy white head. Lighter than other quads. Currants, raisin, light toffee some alcohol. Sweet and fruity flavor with raisin and fig no bitterness. (this rating done from scribbled notes made at a dinner table. Will re-rate later with a more in-depth review.)

Pours a caramel color, much more like a IIPA than a quad. Nose is also more floral and hoppy than other quads. The flavor, however, is all quadruple. Definite brown sugar, toffee, and a tiny bit of dried fruit.

Bottle. Nice and dark looking in my friend’s margarita glass, which was the closest thing to anything appropriate that I had access to under the circumstances. Fruity, with pears being prominent. Some spice as well. Very sweet, alcohol makes itself known in a nice warming way. Excellent beer.

Had this beer 5/20/2007. Aroma is a faint caramel malt scent. Color is a nice brown with a hint of amber. Carbonation is good with a thin but tight head. Taste is rich and sweet. Stating with a medium body it goes down easy. Finish comes on sweet with a malty caramel taste and very light hop flavor and bitterness. On the tail end there is a feel of alcohol that leaves you warm. I don’t know what it is but something is missing, it is way to clean and smooth. There is no fruity yeast taste like you find in a good Belgian Ale. They say they use an authentic Belgian yeast but it doesn’t Show in the end, I think they may over filter it.
