Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Really, really sweet. Tasted like cotton candy when you leave it on the mouth and it starts to crystalize and become that sugary syrupy material. Needed some added flavors to balance out the candy-like flavor.

Thin head, Belgian aroma. Candi sugar and strong yeasty (alcohol) flavor in every sip. Definitely good "big beer". I’d like to get two more bottles; one to cellar and one to drink now.

I knew it. I didn’t read about this first, I just kept tasting Candy. Porued a drity orane, cloudy. Small tan head that did not last too long. Yeast aroma. some fruit. taste was all cany! not bad.

Nice shiny copper/red pour, big thick creamy cap of beige head that leaves a nice sticky lace on the glass. Zesty citrus aroma, spicy, floral and clean. Quite sweet with a nice bit of tartness. Alcohol is present in the finish, but still blends in surprisingly well. Very light mouthfeel for the ABV. Just a little sticky.

If I had a reverend like this, perhaps i’d go to church. Pours a reddish amber. Aroma is of fruit (apricot and banana, mostly), belgian yeast, spice, and bread. Taste is full of fruit, banana bread, yeast ethers. Nice full mouthfeel, good carbonation. This is good for an American version of a quad, but is nothing like the authentic belgian ales.

Its really not bad at all, just not great for the style. Pours a copper color with an off-white head. Aroma of sweet fruit and alcohol. Sweet candy sugar, malt, spice, fruit, and alcohol flavor.

22oz. bottle: This one pours a slightly ruby tinged amber color. There was a very small off white head that disappeared almost immediately. There is some alcohol to the nose. Also notes of spices, caramel, and some fruits. It is very flavorful. There are many. Caramel, a hint of spices, maybe cherries. Nice.

Not my favorite of Avery’s - and I do tend to like them. Guess I’m just not being reverential. A bit too syrupy while not having the other elements come together. Of course I will try again and see if perhaps it was just a day where we didn’t meet on common ground.
