Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Pours light brown/amber. Aroma is sweet malt, yeast, dried fruit. Flavor sweet malt, candied/dried fruit, and some spice. Seems like more of a barleywine.

Small white head on amber/orange body. Aroma is fairly malty with some light to modeate yeast notes and some hops thrown in there just for good measure. A light to medium body and very dry texture the carbonation is no where to speak of. Initial flavor is moderate sweetness and light acidic undertones. An average finish that is moslty malty sweetness and a foreboding alc.

Seems to have a bit of a one dimessional apple flavor as compared to some of the other good Belgian syles. Aroma is mainly sweet apples. Beer pours with undersized head for a Belgian, which pretty much completely dissipates rather quickly. Tastes OK, but again is overwhelming apples, without the depth of flavor and yeastiness of most Belgians. Better examples aboud.

Virtually no head. Copper color. Malty, candy apple-like aroma. Toffeeish, sweet fruity taste. What spices were there are mostly buried by the sugars. Should be interesting to try again after 4 years in the bottle.

A light ale. Subtle Belgian taste. Like other Avery brews, a nice beer. It’s not Belgian, so I shouldn’t compare. It does, however, capture some of that taste.

This beer’s appearance is relatively disappointing for the style. The pour was very unimpressive, leaving a thin, white head ultimately resting upon a cherry red, transparant body. Tons of clove in the intial nose, followed by some black cherry and freshly ground nutmeg. Loads of cherry, clove, and a bit of white pepper, as well as some blackberry and curant. A nice, hoppy oily residue lingers on the tongue and continues to release the sweet berry flavor before finishing with a nicy spicy touch. Very fruity, tasty beer; tastes much better and complex than it looks. The clove is also a bit overdone.

Very soft mouthfeel for such a big beer. Raisins figs and plumsfigure in with a turbinado candy suagar aspect. almost no carbonation. Plantains vanilla and brandy notes figure big on the palate. with a good clean finish.
