Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

22 oz bottle, snifter. Candi sugar (tons!) molasses malt (H); spicey hops (L); doughy yeast (L). Medium amber-red body with a small, egg-shell white head. Heavily sweet, lightly acidic flavor becomes a moderately sweet, lightly bitter finish. Lots of brown/candi sugar sweetness. Medium-heavy body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. The bottom line is: mmm...sugarn

Clear, brown color. Very Sweet, the cane sugar and molasses comes through in a big way here. Couldn't drink many of these in a sitting. Good beer with a cigar.

Poured a clear copper color with almost no head. A nice sweet aroma with mainly brown sugar notes too it. Flavor was initially sweet but finished with a bready-alcohol mix. Carbonation was low, body seemed thin for this style.

Bottle poured dark copper with a nice white head and thick lacing. Aroma of sweet malts, fruit and light spice. Flavor is malty, smooth and well balanced with a spicy alcohol finish.

22 oz bottle
Aroma / Appearance - The body was a rusty red, like someone had dissolved old nails in it and left a trace of carbonation. Hints of white wine, applesauce and vanilla beans came from the glass with only a trace of things that I generally associate with quadrupels.
Flavor / Palate - The first impression was extremely bitter and alcoholic. It overwhelmed the caramel, cherries and banana flavors. The mouthfeel was very expansive - no corner of my mouth was left untouched. Unfortately this one was slightly unbalanced; Avery needs to work on lowering the alcoholic presence so that the other tastes can shine through

Beautiful golden amber, no head, but some lacing. Interesting combination of a belgian tripel and a barleywine — neither is my favorite style but the combination works here. Bready / yeasty taste from the tripel. Warming alcohol and a back of the mouth cough syrup and fruitiness that I associate more with barleywine and extreme beers like raison d'extra. There are enough great Belgian tripels and Belgian style beers out there; this is not on my short list of favorites. But it is a decent drinkable beer. And no I did not share tasting notes with slikwily.

Bottle. Amber pour, surprisingly clear and with a minimal head. Nice lacing, though. Dried fruits (apricots and strawberries), banana, malt, burnt sugar on the nose. A little dried ginger. Sweet palate (banana pancakes!) with hot alcohol burn. Really not my favorite, but worked well for the quick buzz I was hoping for tonight. That’s sad if that’s all I can say about a quadrupel, particularly from Avery. A value for the price, but there are certainly better quads out there.

bottle. dark copper with nice clarity and thin tiny bubble head. apricot, yeast, rich malt, banana, spice aroma. earthy palate, very bitter finish, sour, tart, musky, floral, medium body. alocohol well hidden but this didn’t do it for me.
