Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Dark copper with a medium size white head. Sweet malt aroma with hints of dark fruit. Flavor of sweet malt, but not nearly as sweet as I expected. Hints of candy sugar with a touch of malts at the finish. Probably be better if laid down for a year.

Draught at 4th Annual Wildland Firefighters Benefit & Festival. At the Pumphouse in Longmont, CO. Sample in a pint glass. Beer pours a clear, medium, amber-brown color with an average, white, frothy, moderately lasting head that left behind a moderate amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma was lightly malty with a light note of toasted grain; Moderately hoppy with a note of green grass; Lightly yeasty with a note of cellar; and miscellaneous notes of moderate alfalfa, light notes of honey and tea and moderate notes of unripe banana and clove. The flavor was heavily sweet, moderately acidic and heavily bitter with a long, warm, moderately bitter, lightly acidic finish. The body was medium, the texture was watery-to-syrupy and the carbonation was average.

Not a bad quad. Smells of dark fruit, caramel, and candy sugar. The flavor is likewise with notes of cherries, sugar, and a bit of spice. Little bite at the end. Overall not bad.

Bottle: This will be my first quadrupel, so here it goes. A big dosage of malt in the aroma accompanied by a yeast and spicey nose. A brass copper colored hue with some sediment and cloudiness. Head is a thin layer that breaks up quickly before i had the chance to sip it. Taste is like no other beer i have had before; Quite a strong presence of alcohol bringing warmth to my throat on the swallow. Mostly a malt, a candy sugar, and a funky strain of Belgian yeast with a touch of pine is the flavor. Also, i noticed a small resemblance to the fruit juice of papaya and metallic mouthfeel as well as peculiar aftertaste left behind. Not that i hated it but i didnt enjoy it like the other Avery beers i’ve had.

See-through copper body with short white head. Aroma is fairly weak and what is there is sweet — caramel, candy, plums, apples. The flavor was filled with peppery alcohol that gave way to brown sugar, cotton candy and hints of plum. Bitter, peppery finish. The medium to full body leaves a sticky, sweet aftertaste.
