Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Rated 10/26/06: Enjoyable beer, right in line with most Belgian traits but it’s tough to convince myself that this is a true quadrupel. Medium copper pour huge head and nice lacing. Inviting aroma sugary with that familiar Belgian yeast strain. Sharp and biting on the tongue, the finish is strong with a huge alcohol burn, it’s alright. Flavor is also strong and very solid. Big candy sweetness mixed in with a good showing of crisp hops. Some yeasty earthiness backed up with a fruity hint. Overall a decent sipper.

Location:Bottle, purchased at Gilly’s

Aroma: Fruity, spiciness, raisin
Appearance: Orange, cloudy, full head
Flavor: Really nice complexity comes through as you drink it.
Palate: Full body, little creamy
Overall Impression: Enjoyable beer with some interesting complexity. Quads are definately one of my favorite styles of beer. This one has some fruity flavors, strong hint of raisins, hides the alcohol really well, you can hardly taste the 10%. Overall pretty enjoyable.

This was going to be my Easter beer but I endulged too much the night before and had no interest in drinking on Sunday. Oh well, was just fine with dinner on Monday after Easter. Copper to Amber color with a wispy white head. The aroma is spicy (cardamom and coriander?) as well as having dried fruit hints (raisin?). I don’t know what that body/flavor is but every time I note “Belgian candy sugar” I taste/feel this thing. Identifiable to me were an initial sweetness that was a bit cotton candy like. There were also banana, apple and raison. Spice was also present. The body was slick and oily, which really let the sweetness stick around. Not bad but not anything I’ll be trying again soon.

Bottled. Pours ruby red with no head. Very faint aroma- I can’t seem to make it out it’s so faint. My nose could be a little off tonight. Malty assualt at first sip! Tons of dark fruit notes and sweet, sweet, sweet. Did I mention it’s sweet? A bit of lingering sweetness on the tongue as well in the aftertaste.

Bottle. Pours a opaque reddish-caramel color, with a wisp of wet head. Sticky sheets of lacing. Raisin, caramel, dough, fig, melon...could be more assertive though. Raisin in the flavor, and licorice, molasses, caramel, banana, brown sugar, peach. Lots of stuff here, nice. Medium-bodied, and drinkable despite the ABV. Nice clean finish. Well-balanced. This is good.

Bottle- Pours a medium amber brown color, small white head. Aroms tickles your nose, fresh with some minor notes of dark fruit, bread. Drinking this is sweet ad malty, finishes slightly dry and boozy. A decent brew

Pours reddish brown with nearly no head. Aroma full of sugar, cherries, and malt. Syrupy mouthfeel compliments the sweet and fruity taste. Lots of currants and candy sugar in this one. Gets better as it warms, but still keeps the sweet character.
