Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Pours semi hazy burnt umber with medium off-white head. Complex nose of Belgian malt, candi sugar, hopcit, fruit. Tastes fruity (cherries, red winey), sweet, with finishing hops, candi sugar, and alcohol. Very complex and pretty well balanced, but gets a bit warming at the finish. For God’s sake, get a designated driver if you drink more than one of these.

Red amber ale with no head. Apple cider aroma, slighlty spiced. Porto sweetness with resinous pinhey hops. Rich bodied and delicious. May 2004.

Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, cookie), with notes of orange, banana, clove, sugar, alcohol. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly bitter, lightly acidic. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Quite sweet, otherwise pretty nice.

Bottled, I believe from 2002. Sparkly orangish-red clear body, medium lasting head. Looks kinda reminiscent of a Flemish sour to me. Strong sweet cherry/strawberry nose, pleasant if you want to smell fruit syrup but not very beerlike at all. Flavor also extremely sweet, but a bit of hop bitterness does cut into the honeyed fruit dominance. Thick, rather cloying; hints of smokiness towards the end. Drinkable, but doubt I would ever buy it again.

Malty aroma backed by Belgian candi, yeast and spice notes. Beautiful dark orange amber color with a white head that promptly ringed. A bit thin in body. Starts quite sweet, with dark sugar, dark fruits (in a light sort of way), and some varying spicy notes. The finish is mildly sweet, and there is not really a hint of bitter. Just a touch of what could be considered very ripe fruit.

Really enjoyed this on tap. Has a small tan head and is a dark relatively clear ruby color. Aroma is peaches, raspberry, sweet malts and a little alcohol. Taste is peaches, vanilla and caramel. I found this to be very interesting.

Sweet marzipan, strong alcohol and hazelnuts feature in this pleasant, sweet and malty aroma. Clear mahogany brown with large-bubbled, off-white head that diminishes to very thin cover. Candy sugar and nutty malts in the flavour. Somewhat hot. Sweet and straight-forward and altogether more like a strong Northern English brown ale than an ABT. Yeast character seems fairly neutral. Medium full body. Bottle. Enjoyed with MartinT and Rastacouere. Thanks, Dorwart!
Upon resampling, I had to bump the score down a bit as I found it to be quite alcoholic and somewhat thin and astringent. Original score was 8-3-6-4-15 - bumped down to 8-3-6-2-13.
