Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

This did not quite live up to my admittedly high expectations, and I am not quite sure why. The bitterness of this beer really stuck out for me, as did the alcohol. Still quite enjoyable but many of the complexities are lost on an even slightly tired palate because of the dominating presence of the hops and alcohol. Deserves a second go round. Cheers Radek for this one. Amen!

Glowing orange color. Medium head. Aromas are malts, fruits and brown sugar. A full-bodied Belgian Style Ale. The malts are bold, very sweet and fruity. Yeasty, with a hint of spiciness. Its very sweet, perhaps overly so. But, its also very smooth. There are hints of the 10% alcohol, some in its slightly ‘oily’ texture and most noticeable it is warming effect, but it has no alcohol bite. This is a nice sipping beer, once you can get past its sweetness. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is smooth. Aftertaste is sweet.

This bottled brew poured a small head of mostly diminishing light brown colored bubbles that left behind a carbonated transparent brown colored body and a poor lace. The aroma had mild caramel malt notes with a slight vinuous odor. Oh what a rush in the mouth! The mouthfeel comes on strong like a freight train. It is strongly vinuous with a port like alcohol content that is not masked at all. Then the sweet caramel malt hits with a big finish. Definately a big beer. Good for sippin, but maybe too overpowering in the alcohol burn.

Bottle. Yet another Quardrupel, but this time somewhat disappointing. Small off-white fizzy head that mostly diminished. Spar lacing. Light particles in flow and color were amber. Aroma was recognizable as a Quardrupel with notes of dry fruit, hint of bread, toffee, liquorish and light vinous. Medium to full bodied with a light alcoholic texture. Flavor was moderated sweet malt with hint of hops bitterness. Finish was short and sweet. Not as powerful as I had hoped, think it needs a bit more punch in the aroma and over the palate, but still a very drinkable Quardrupel.

On draft at KClingers: Bright red with only a thin veil to top it off. The aroma is somewhat raisin-like. Onto the drink ... this is exceptionally smooth and easy to drink. Sweet syrupy but not too much, very well balanced. Why do I think there’s a monster lurking just below the surface of this innocent-feeling brew? (#2715, 2/18/2007)

Bottle Pours an amber ruby color with a thin diminshed head. Aged 2 years. Still a strong nose of etoh and caramel malt. There are good fruit flavors to be tasted here as well and decent spicyness. I shared this bottle and the sample i got i really enjoyed.

Bottle shared with Mette, Morten and Lui. Small white head. Aromas as a bag of sweets, very sweet, no brown fullgrain bread (rugbrøds) as i like it. But some hops and alcohol. But to sweet for my taste.

(Bottled) Clear red-amber color with a small head. Strongly berryish aroma (cranberry, lingonberry) with sweet candy-syrupy maltiness and smooth, aromatic hops. Sweet toffee flavor with candi sugar, aromatic-oaky hops and some alcohol burn in the finish. Long, aromatic-hoppy aftertaste. Medium to full-bodied palate with medium carbonation. More like a barley wine than quadrupel. Pretty sweet, but otherwise ok. Not nearly as good as the bottle lets you think, though.
