Commercial Description:
The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

Pours a crystal clear copper-orange color under a fluffy and thick off-white head. Quite odd the see a Belgian Quad style beer so translucent without the typical haziness. Head dissapates quickly to some spotty blotches of foam. No lacing noted. Aroma is of rich, luscious ripe brandy soaked black cherries, figs, dates and raisins against a background of caramel, malt and spices. Mouthfeel is nicely balanced between the heavy, chewy, thick body and the overtly spritzy carbonation which keeps the texture from becoming too oily or slick. The flavor profile of this beer improved immensely as it warmed from its initial serving temp of 50*F. Taste was very sweet and rich with notes of Belgain candy and dark brown sugar along with caramel candy apples, raisins, dates, some faint banana and cloves and warming alcohol. Finishes with just a hint of hop bitterness to keep the sweetness in check. Goes down real easy for a 10%’er. Found these at a local upscale grocery market for $3.69/bomber so I picked up 10 of them. Makes it even that more enjoyable to get such a nice price on ’em.

Marinara sauce. The aroma was of a delicious italian dinner. and beer. None of the flavors mentioned by the commercial description came through that clearly for me. I was assaulted with spices that washed over the entire mouth, plenty of citrus (orange), full bodied, and an herbal/sweet malt backbone. Finished the same with some candy sweetness wrapped around the light hops and spice. very orange color, with a very orange head. GREAT American sendup for the style.

Holy candi sugar. Big in the aroma, and the taste? Yea a lot of candi sugar and alcohol. Not to say it wasn’t nice, because it was. Alcohol does not offend. It works for me.

Very overt belgain yeast - especially strong are the dried flower and fig or currant. I was surprised at just how compact this beer seems, a very dense beer that sits really well on the palate. I wasn’t as blown away by the candy sugar as I thought I would be, but the alchohol is definitely present here. A surprisingly good drinking beer.

#666. I needed The Reverend for this one! Red-brown -orange color, big malts get sweet but not overly sweet. Big alcohol, can taste it going down the pipes. Darker fruits like cherries and raisins are there. A delicious big sipping beer. Heaven help us!

My 2300th. From bomber shared with my wife. Light alcoholic vapors, fruity in character with cherry wood and blossoms, craisins, and maple sugar. Sweet fragrant nose with some unfermented sugar tang. Light hop notes. Coppery amber clear body with thin off-white lacing head. Medium-heavy body, not chewy but not watery either. Carbonation is fairly low, but still gives just a bit of carbonic tang. Alcoholic warming on this one. Starts pretty sweet, with brown sugar, maple and cherry wood, alcohol and some phenols. Light raisin with some vanilla. Still pretty hot, this one, though drinkable. Finish is sweet, not sticky, with an underlying dry bitter character. Not hoppy, but not overly sweet. After is dull sweet with lingering alcohol.
