Aroma of sweet cotton candy almost. The taste of malt is there, and some citrus. Good beer! jstraw (763), Chicago, Illinois, USA

It was a gift, and I love belgian beers. I am not sure what quadrupel ale means but it is very very tasty. My favorite beers are hoegarden and guiness. krisbierjaeger (844), dolores, Colorado, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 30, 2002 as far as the silly verbiage on the label, i doubt satan would ’fear’ this beer, i picture him/her relishing a mug after a long day of tempting wayward human souls and squating on brimstones: i know it engenders in me some fairly carnal thoughts. anyway, god and satan are clearly in cahoots. but theology aside: here’s a pretty red beer, like a tanned ruby grapefruit; the head peters out while you’re still admiring it, leaving only a mini-depiction of a wispy spiral galaxy on top. i get bready gran marnier liqueur (orange) and alcohol. i like it. hic. please observe how our more learned tasters below can’t agree if it’s hoppy or malty. we do agree that it’s sweet. i’d like to taste a batch without the sugar, but i can live with it, and the faint carbonation. hic. i was expecting a yeasty citrusy belgian kind of thing, but this could come from scotland. no one will say it’s boring. i say it’s grand. and the god’s allegedly agree. It seemed that the alc. was well hidden in the flavors, but it left a warm burn at the back of the swallow. Thick, sweet, some chocolate covered cherries, big spicy orange flavors. This had about the thickest after swallow mouthfeel ever - my whole mouth tasted like sweet orange malty sugar. It was a bit cloying, but not unpleasant. This one calls for a second try to pick up on more nuances. ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

The problem with the Avery "The" series (Czar, Reverend, Majaraja, Kaiser), is it’s hard to remember which ones you’ve had. Now that I’ve finally had the Reverend, I’ve had them all, so I don’t need to worry about it. Clearly underrated, there appears to be a bias against Avery for some reason. This is clearly one of the top 10-15 brewers in the country. Relatively faint aroma with some Belgian qualities. Slightly hazy copper body. Large yellowish, off-white head. Beautiful copper with lots of visible carbonation. Excellent lace. Very sweet and strong. Similar to New Glarus Unplugged Belgian Quad. This has a little more hop in the finish and is better than the NG. Excellent. Sincere (145), wichita, Kansas, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 13, 2006 Bomber bottle. Pours a beautiful copper with lazy carbonation and a substantial off-white head that leaves great leggy lacing. The nose is complex, with banana esters, apples, caramel and an overall sugary sweetness. The beginning taste is where the punch is, which tastes almost like a fruit punch in fact. There’s so much going on here, it’s almost hard to map. Cherries and the above mentioned in the aroma. So sweet throughout the mid with a nice mellow current to the malty finish. The high alcohol content is barely apparent. This beer glides across the tongue. I was suprised at the lower scores on here. Another great Avery beer, and one of my favorites soley due to it’s complexity.
